what do you guys in the NAC think......

I would be up for helping out with it. I think it would definitely be a good way for some chapter members to meet. The only problem I forsee is how large our chapter is preventing some people who are furthere away from taking part.

It's an idea, but I wonder how the suppliers would react to the rigs being beaten to death, then what? If we are going to beat them that badly, what if we limited the upgrades to only what could be gotten in the local yards?

Or, what if we made it a two year time limit to coincide with the elections, one year to build and one year to bring it to any and all local car shows to sell raffle tickets for it and have a couple of sections of Moab used in a timed/finess style competition that wouldn't destroy the rigs and have the raffle at the end? The money raised could be used by National to support the Rescue Units and the suppliers/donators wares could be displayed all over the chapter area for people to see up close. There'd still be bragging rights as the competition could include not only the score from the trail but added points for how many tickets were sold for that vehicle. All the raffle tickets would be the same price. If the chapter built a ratty looking rig that beat the competition on the trail, it may not sell all that many tickets to the general public. A better looking rig that scored in the middle of the pack or even last might be able to make up places by selling more tickets. We might also be able to get more support from suppliers, and members who have to travel any distance, to help if the rigs weren't going to be trashed in the end. Could even limit suppliers to those only in the chapter area.

You were asking for thoughts. . .:)

this isnt a give-away XJ.... its a run-what-ya-brung competiton between the chapters at the years final major event.. i was thinking between everyone inthe chapter we all have enough spare stuff laying around that we wouldn't have to buy much of anything.. they did a similar competition in MOAB when i went last year.. took a few stockers and beat the snot out of them on the "proving grounds" and gave an award for the best time..

I have some spare parts to donate, if needed. I would be willing to donate some new RE parts through Authorized Vehicle 4x4.

Seems like a waste of time and effort to me. And who "owns" the vehicle -- or what's left of it?

Personally, if the chapter wants to embark on a construction project, I'd favor building up an XJ for Search-and-Rescue duty and donatinbg it to a SAR team somewhere within our "territory." I know there's a SAR unit in western PA that lost an XJ about a year ago ...

How about to keep it fair you have to fabricate every thing your self no marketed jeep parts allowed. that would make it interesting. then it would make it fair between the teams. Otherwise every one would be hitting up the same vendors and that would make some angry manufactures. besides that it would really sharpen peoples building skills. And then there could also be a limit that can be placed into a vehicle like a salary cap

I think that would be a better cause. Then we could have the satisfaction of knowing our hard work is benifiting someone as compared to sitting in a scrap heap after we've had our fun with it.

- JeepinAudiophile and I have the audio covered :D

I don't have a problem with the other idea, just that I would rather not put any money towards it- free work, free parts sounds good to me- kinda like "Junkyard Wars" to "Chapter Wars"

- A SAR vehicle I would more than willing to put some time and a little money into

i really think all this discussion should be in the original thread which i linked... so we could at least decide on what kind of competition it should be between the chapters.. the original idea is to get together a few beaters and have fun with them.. not a resoration project.. i am not opposed to the "give away raffle" or the "SAR dontation" but those would both take an incredible amount of time, effort and above all $$$$$.. alot could be had thru sponsors and they are not bad ideas.. and the vehicle i have in mind as a possible candidate is absolutely NOT worthy of anything besides some floor patching a quick cage and a "last hurrah" blasting thru some full throttle obstacles for purely insane preasure.. anyone who knows my trail rig would agree.. it could never be pretty (let alone fixed properly)..
but who'se to say we can't get 2 projects going?? the build-up vehicle will take a considerable amount of time to plan and build..

It's not a bad thing that discussion take place here - for NAC's perspective.

For what it's worth, I think a smack-down competition among chapters is a good thing to promote, but activities like that are best left in an informal mode. Trying to "organize" such chaos would kill the enjoyment of that kind of challenge.

Actually, I think a chapter project truck would be a good idea - beyond the bonding that it would encourage amongst chapter members and enjoyment of the actual build up. It certainly could be turned into valuable support for a worthy organization. I think the SAR idea is an interesting one, but the red tape and cost involved might be prohibitive. Building a give-away raffle truck to MAKE MONEY for such a group might be more practical approach.

Keep the ideas coming folks!

i meant to set guidlines about what the competition would require.. a total flogging on the Proving Grounds would be out of the question for anything we would expect to get active raffle sales going for... and Moab might be too far to take a rig for a show-n-shine and RTI ramp competition.. i really like the idea of a build-up raffle rig.. and as mike suggested maybe the proceeds going to a particular charity and maybe not the actual rig.. i can think of 3 events in the NAC that we could drag it to to sell tickets.. Bloomsburg PA and Essex Jct Vt 4 wheel drive jamborees as well as the Great American Jeep Rally up here in Ma... but as a raffle vehicle i would not want it to be street driven.. it would be bad enough if it were in an accident while on a trailer enroute to an event.. daily driving it would be a VERY BAD IDEA.... Eagle had mentioned a build-up MJ a while back.. still interested in donating a suitable MJ??
