is that something i NEED right now today or can i still get along without it for a little bit

That depends on if it leaks oil when you start it.You can put a pipe plug in the hole until you replace the sensor.

Depends on how much of it is broken off. I had to replace mine because it eventually wore out. The final straw was when something inside the sensor failed all together and when the engine was on and had any oil pressure it would shoot oil out the sensor plug with enough force to hit the firewall.

Fire up the motor and have someone run it at about 2-3K RPM's and see if you get an oil fountain. If not you might be ok but I'd still replace it ASAP, I think it was like a $15 part.

Most likely, yes. If the sender left in the fitting is not leaking, then it should be fine to drive over and get the new sender ( the one for the idiot light, not the gauge style). After you shut the motor down, wait a few minutes ( like while getting the new one ) and then just change it out right there. Just don't crank down on it too hard, or you will break it, too.

In a pinch, that hole is threaded 1/8"NPT and a brass plug works nicely.

The "I-D-ten-T" light sensor is usually $10-15 - the gage one costs about twice as much.

If you want to get it out of your way, you can use a 1/8"NPT "close" nipple and a 1/8"NPT female-female elbow to point it upwards or off to the side, so it's not hanging over the filter. That should make your life a little easier.

You can get by without it for a while - but I'd prefer not to. A week or so tops (and you might want to consider a gage swap anyhow...)

Oh - and clean your engine, willya? Looks pretty nasty in there...

There's a good theory in this "never replace something if upgrade is available" So now is the time to swap in full guages. the oil sender is one of the senders you have to replace, so why not do it now? IIRC the other sender is the temp sender. Of course this all depends on the year. Do a search and find out how easy it is.

REPLACE it now...I had to take my Heep to Greasy Monkey many years back and they did the same thing. The sender survived a trip from Denver to Boise and finally let go as I was leaving Boise...big cloud of smoke occurred as the oil hemhorraged out.

I ended up in a truck stop parking lot for the night as a JB Welded quarter cured on the remains of the sender. That worked just fine for 3000 miles until I decided to correct it.

Always unplug that sender when changing your oil; it's in a bad spot and you don't need it to bleed out with 40psi or more in it.

Edit: By the way, what year is that? It looks like an HO engine, so you can use a larger filter now. Try a Motorcraft FL-1A, Fram PH-8A (only if you have to), or my preference Wix 51515 in there instead.

i go to fair auto in town and they tell me the one that comes up on their computer as the one for the cluster that has a gauge is the one that fits my car, and we went out and checked and it did fit, and the one they have listed for the cluster with only a light which is what i have, it doesnt fit my jeep, what the helllll is going on here, the guage one they want 70 for while the one that should but doesnt fit mine is 20

bulleted form:
for some reason i apparantly have the sensor for a cluster with an oil gauge instead of the sensor for what i actually have, a light. but it has worked since ive owned the jeep....confusion

Go some where else quick, none of them should ever be $70.

I don't know about the '97 specifically. But, I purchased an 'idiot lamp' version at the dealer, and I don't think it even hit $15.

Check with a dealer.

Yes, I would go to a dealer to begin with. It is worth the extra money. I am in school to be an automotive technician and I have worked at a parts store before. Betweens those two experiences I have learned that parts store parts are junk.

Not all parts stors are bad just like not all dealears are good.
Fairfield auto is a dealer I think.

CLEAN YOUR ENGINE

if i had to do an oil change on that engine, i would DEFINITELY clean all around that filter before i removed that filter--i wouldnt want any crud to get into my new filter/oil

That 97 looks just like my 99 did a couple weeks back.

Spray that sucker down with Simple Green and let it soak a while.
I mean really soak it good with simple green. In 20 minutes or so spray it down with a spray nozzle on the water hose. It cleaned the thing right up. Looked almost as good as new.
