What are you doing to your rig - the continuing saga

Tonight in the "well, duh" category, I realized at 11:00 at night that the 242 and 231 shift position sensors are physically different and do not interchange. Well to be clear - the 231 sensor can go into a 242, it just won't work right. The 242 sensor however will go partially into the 231 and them jam. Guess I'm making a junkyard run first thing in the AM in my wife's car.

Pretty sure those senders are some goofy metric thread. I'd just drop the original sender in until you get one from rockauto or something.

Ahhh, damn. At least it's a regular old straight thread you can get at the parts store, though. Probably need an O-ring or at least some tef-tape...

Let the thrashing begin! Flores tore down my 89' today and found some pretty interesting things.

And who wants to play the "What's missing in this picture" game? Troy and Flores are exempt.

Ding Ding Ding!

The whole transmission was held on by 2 bolts.....2!

And this further validates my decision to ditch this hunk of shit and move into the 98'. Hack job to the Nth degree.

And they were in the same plane, too... every bump was probably spreading the bell from the block and beating the hell out of the crank, pilot bearing, and input bearing. Stupid.

I'll admit I did discover that I was missing one of my bellhousing bolts when I pulled the drivetrain out of my XJ to do a mantrans swap... the old engine I replaced the summer before was a horrible leaker and everything was covered in a good thick coat of grease and grime. I know I torqued those bolts gudentight, but there was probably so much gunk between the head and the bellhousing that it worked its way loose since then.

Either way, it's all torqued to somewhat above spec now, because the spec is so low it makes me uncomfortable :gee:

Finished the last of the 89' deconstruction. We had to improvise on how to lift the rear high enough to get the suspension out of it. There were a few death-defying moments that, as a risk manager, will haunt my nightmares. But whatever, everything was removed without anyone getting hurt, so all-in-all I'd say it was a success.

Poor Big Green Egg.....I swear I heard the frame popping and crying. They were pops of sadness. :(

{Sarcasm On}

See... This is where you are obviously very, very confused. The Previous Owner must have had mad racing skills as he was able to remove all of that excess weight off of the machine. Must have made it a good 1/4 MPH faster...

{Sarcasm Off}

Fortunately, you got it apart before it fell apart. What a scary find.

I agree. I went from shocked, to amused, to angry....the fact that my wife drove around in that POS, with the drivetrain hanging on by a thread really infuriates me. If she had been hurt, I may have laid hands on the PO.

And I do believe a line would have formed behind you to take turns. That thing was near criminally negligent. Had a disaster occurred (and aren't we glad it did not...) IMO, that is the charge he could have been hit with. Criminal Negligence.

There is no possible way he did not know how it was (almost) put together...

Explain how you can blame the previous owner here??? To just say the PO did this and pawned it off on you is crap! You are the current owner and I am assuming for a while, so it is now your problem. Whos to say those bolts did not come out during your ownership?? Did you look that thing over really well before buying it.... dought it. For the most part nobody can know everything about the Jeep they are selling and those bolts are in a place that is seldom checked. How often do you crawl under your heep and inspect EVERY nut and bolt?? My guess is never...... To just say you would lay hands on someone because the beat up old jeep you bought from them had a problem in a place that is seldom inspected is STUPID and could land you in jail or in a six foot hole!
