What are you doing to your rig - the continuing saga

Maybe.................. :eyes:

I was busy today. Finished up my rock sliders. Flores was nice enough to bend a tube that was supposed to go into my cage, however I didn't measure it correctly, so I ad-libbed and used them on my sliders...lol.

What's the saying?...Making chicken salad out of chicken sh!t.

Also burned in a new set of TeraFlex sway bar mounts to go around my high-knuckle steering. Discos are a little long, but the rig handles 10x better now. Thanks again Flores!

I honestly don't mind 8.25 drum brakes... when they aren't rusted into a giant ball of hatred, which likely isn't an issue for you.

8.8 drum in hat e-brakes on the other hand... NEVER AGAIN.

Well.... If they could be found, the Police Special rear drums work impressively. I looked into this conversion back in '01 and had an issue locating the backing plates. Everything else was readily available.

The difference? Larger drums, 10" instead of the stock 9" drum. Huge difference.

Kastein, I have to ask what was the issue you ran into. The Currie I run has Ford Exploder rear disks with the parking brake in the hat. I have had zero issues so far.

The 4 stupid-ass return springs behind and in front of the stiffening rib on the shoes. Specifically the ones behind them... those can suck a big fat one.

As I recall it was all jammed in behind the axleshaft flange, too, which only increased the tool throwing and cursing.

I don't know where I posted my question about LED taillights and turn signals, and the fact that both taillights blinked when either turn signal was activated. It has nothing to do with resistance, that causes too fast blinkage. I separated out the ground wires from the harness and used the body, no effect. Read schematics over and over, couldn't see where there could be a crossover. However, taillights flashing is similar to the hazard light flashing, so even though I already had electronic flashers, I changed out the hazard flasher. No effect. Which led me to the U-Haul trailer light adapter that was installed 20 years ago, took the turn signals out of that, and behold, normal behavior.

Time to move on the front yard. :)

Got the new axle in and running. Still whines a little under acceleration. REALLY hoping that's normal. I wonder if any vibrations in my driveshaft are causing issues with the pinion bearings.

WTF is that??? What do the drive faces of the ring gear look like? Any big chunks in there ? It looks like somebody cut into the ring gear.

Looks like it was set up really bad. I would love to see some pix of the coast side of the ring gear along with some close ups of the pinion, both sides.

When you had the first bearing go out did we replace only the one carrier bearing or both?

The only thing I can really think of is that those crap bearings started dumping a bunch of crud into it and allowed the pinion gear to move around. I wish you had come to me when it started making noise again, I would have done my best to make it all work out for you and possibly save those gears. You're the first person to have a major issue with an axle I set up. I hope the replacement axle works out for you.

As to the noise from the new one, 8.8's and 8.25's both require grinding of 2 of the ring gear teeth in order to clear the cross pin once you go up to a gear set numerically higher than 4.10's. I've noticed that usually leads to a bit of noise, mostly when transitioning from the drive to coast side of the gear.

I think Flores meant round. Those spider gears look really rounded and worn out.

I believe you said you got the bearings from AutoHaus?? How about the gears? I'm just trying to get as much info as possible as I've never had an issue like this before. he only set of gears I've ever had fail were in a HMMWV at work, and that was from the mechanic taking it on a road test with out having filled the diffs up with gear oil. They lasted about 17miles with just the bit of assembly lube I like to coat the bearing with when I put it all together.

If your trashed axles is still together (ring and pinion wise) I'd like to check it out so I can see what all failed and try to figure out what happened.
