What are you doing to your rig - the continuing saga

Well shit she is playing th girl card on me and wants to work on the looks of it first instea of bumpers. Yay. :gee:

hello kitty bumpers?

Hahahaha she totally would. No she wants new fenders. Better doors paint tint and better interior. Might look at some better seat options for inside and black carpet too.

Ya I'll pass on the wife and kids for now. Lol.

As I. Denise likes her clothing collection and I need a truck. lol

Maybe someday.

I put the twig on the giggle berries, so I'm done. :greensmok

Me too. Twice. :D

Permanent death wobble repair coming soon

I would love to know what it is. I feel I have a bit of the Death Wobble ghost still in my rig. Broke my track bar this summer and the replacement just hasn't been the same (and my XJ was stolen almost 2 years ago and found. Hasn't driven the same since. I feel there is something else broken or damaged that my mechanic can't find).

A serious Jeep guy IS his own mechanic ..... DUH ;)

yup, i still get a hint of DW with my hydro assist

Really, my setup got rid of any hint I had..... the ram acts like a stabilizer :twak:

Mine is really random, but I can always tell when it about to happen. I can drive it for weeks and not a problem....then out of the blue it will act up several times in one drive cycle.
It has full crossover steering, everything tight and I still can't pin down one single cause. When it does start, It always starts on a slight right curve, 45-55 mph, especially if I happen to hit a bump at the same time. I can count on it happening nearly 100% if I'm getting on eb I-70 from nb Wadsworth. Right curve and hitting the expantion joint in the road at 45 mph; hold on to your hats folks, it's gonna get bumpy.

Is that full hydro or hydro assist?

Either way, don't 100% count on that fixing things.

Assist, and by rights, it should fix it 100%, if all else is correct.
An assist ram holds the cross tie rod rock solid so DW can't start. Unlike the OEM damper that is supposed to absorb the harmonics that allow DW to mature, there is no give in a ram. . . If you are still getting DW, then you have more problems aside from the steering.

This. I have the opportunity to fix unimaginable DW on a couple different cherokees with a ram. One was so bad you could not drive it over 25-30 mph without it happening. After the ram install.. 75 mph on the highway with nary a hint of DW.

I need to off set my heims On my tie rod
I still get a bit of roll with the ram

This statement confuses me. The ram must not be installed parallel to the steering arm if you are getting roll. What do you mean by offseting the heims to correct that?

I guess I am confused. If you require a ram to fix death wobble you aren't fixing shit. You are covering it up with the ram. No different than people with dual dampners.
If it can't cruise down road with no dampner or ram without issue you have a problem. Tossing one of those on does not fix the problem.

"An assist ram holds the cross tie rod rock solid so DW can't start."

While it might "hold" the tie rod, your head is still in the wrong place. You're approaching it completely wrong. Unless you fix it WITHOUT the assist on there, your assist has just become a "band-aid" to once again...try and mask the problem.

Believe me when I say suspension actions and geometry as something I'm very, very familiar with.

A damper is a band-aid that *might* mask it. A dampener is in not supposed to be there absorb harmonics per se, that was not the true engineering reason for it. The more "true" engineering reason behind the steering damper (which is actually a bad name for it :D) was to give the steering a "stiffer" response. You can take a steering damper off, and if your steering is correct...should not be one bit different. I ran without a damper with my crossover when I had it and much preferred it.

If you do NOT fix your issue BEFORE you put the assist on there, you're going to move stress/strain of parts to areas you do not want.

There are many a person on here who will tell you the same thing. I struggled with DW for a while on mine, until I got it all figured out...and it had nothing to do with any of my setups.

Exactly Mike...as I posted, a ram is NOT the fix, it is merely a band-aid.

I have a feeling I know where that stress might be transferred to, and it will not be pretty (get ready for frame repairs).

Hopefully he'll realize there are many of us who are FAR more experienced in this than we wanted to be with DW and will heed our advice :D
