What are you doing to your rig - the continuing saga

i always do/make things to spread the load--a sound practice on frames and stuff like that. makes your stuff last longer :)
but how does that product do that? Where would it mount? To modify it might be more work than just making your own. :dunno:

Yeah, this link labels the fuse to the accessory delay relay as "Sunroof."

Good news is that the alternator swap on a WJ 4.7 is absolutely, without a doubt, the easiest alternator replacement, EVAR! 20 minutes, tops.

The bad news is that yes, that is the wiring diagram I used, yes, that is the relay that controls the sunroof, and NO, mine isn't bad. :helpme: I swapped it out with several known goods, with no effect. I checked the rails for obstructions, found none, and lubricated them with some spray graphite -- no change.

Anyone have any ideas on how to manually get this bad boy to shut? If I can get it shut and sealed, I'll leave it until I have the time and motivation to pull the headliner and replace the motor/whole unit/whatever... :twak:

Probably near the motor is something that can be turned by a tool. Can you get to the motor without pulling the headliner? I don't like sunroofs.

:dunno: I'm currently searching and reading... Its frustrating how much I like the WJ, as far as ride/driving it, but DAMN I'm sick of the electrical issues...

You may have already tried this but have you checked the continuity/resistance from the switch to the motor? I'm wondering if some somehow you're overloading the circuit causing the relay to switch off.

Chris, does your sunroof have a manual closing mechanism? I don't know what cars have them but my old sweet a$$ed Hyundai had one. You would have to remove the sunroof/dome light housing and there was a spot to insert an alan wrench to manually operate it.

Obviously, there is continuity, the motor runs. High resistance would not cause a relay to switch off.

I didn't check continuity for the reasons Fred mentions -- it moves open close about 2-inches from the full open position, but no further.... no manual override on Jeeps, from what I can find. Which is stupid.

Okay...I just read through the old posts. Didn't know it was working incidentally.

Chris, did you definitely find the relay that controls the motor? If so, have someone press the sunroof button and listen for a buzzing sound coming from the relay. If it buzzes that means you've either got a short or the relay is junk.

I replaced the relay with known goods -- no difference.

Hmmmm....

I'm not familiar with the style sunroof, but if you can somehow get a multimeter probe on the motor's positive cable, press the sunroof button and get a voltage reading while it moves that first 2".

While continuing to hold the sunroof button down, keep the probe on the positive wire and wait for the motor to stop. If the voltage doesn't change, that probably means the motor is shot. At least you'll be able to isolate the problem and rule out a relay or wiring issue.

it sounds as though the motor thinks its closed, no grinding, just stops at the same position... I'm researching whether there is a calibration function and perhaps it just lost where it is or something... have to pull the headliner to get to the motor.

Yeah, that's my guess, somehow the sensor to tell the motor to stop when closed is bad.

you would think, but all adjustments have to be done with the motor removed, so that means complete disassembly. Having learned from my alternator that "knowledge through anger" is occasionally effective, I decided to put my back into it and try to manually pull the MF closed... lucky for me it actually worked, and once in a near-closed position, it sealed itself with the motor. Good enough. No more opening sunroof for me until I have the time and inclination to fix it all.

Is it up on top like the 5.2/5.9? Those are my favorite, takes so little time. Especially the later ones with the plug instead of the goofy shaped 4-stud field coil connection setup.

yeah, plus the WJ has an auto belt tensioner, so you just put a little leverage on it, and off comes the belt -- same for install. 3 bolts, 2 plugs. easy peasy.

I thought the ZJs had an auto tensioner too? Not sure. They're 2 bolts :yelclap:

Either way, both are WORLDS better than XJ/MJ alternators for sure. I hate changing those so much I haven't put my almost-brand-new junkyard 136A ZJ alternator in the MJ yet even though I've owned it for two weeks now.
