What are you doing to your rig - the continuing saga

Are you just getting into wheelin USN?

Getting into wheeling, not so much. I've had two other xj's. First was built when I bought it. Second I just half assed it. Took some time away from jeeps, Now I'd like to do this jeep I bought the proper way. I'm still in the learning process of a lot of things when it comes to wheeling though, I won't lie.

so part of my sisters xmas from her grandparents was this:

So i started this tonight.

Then I got the case apart, after draining basically NO fluid.

And found this:

Soooooo not happy. bleh

What spline is that? I have a box in my garage that I pulled about 10 years ago. I completely tore it down and rehab'd it, along with a new chain to have for a spare. I pulled it apart about a year ago and stole the new sliders out of it. I have the replacements around here somewhere.

I am without a job at the moment. I could use $100 for it and I would install the SYE in the case if it matches.

Tom if you weren't so far north it would be enticing. But a few hours drive makes it a lil rough. Thanks anyway though

Are the dog teeth on the shift collar just as worn? If they aren't (crossing my fingers...) you're gonna junk that output shaft anyways so who cares.

Sucks about the shift fork, if I wasn't 1500 miles away I'd give you one. Got a "shifters jammed won't work" scrap 231 free for parts a while ago and been slowly cannibalizing it. Hopefully someone a little more local has a busted one to swipe parts out of or something.

Never seen a 231 with a brass synchro on it, either. I've only been in 3 or 4, maybe I just never noticed it.

No the collar is in great shape. Looks like that synchro to all the abuse there. Which is why I was thinking it was brass because it seems to have given in real easy. Ya I am not too worried about it. It just means her jeep gets newer parts. Im just annoyed It has to take longer to complete :dunno:

It looks like brass for sure, I just was completely unaware there was one in there. I'll have to check the old shafts I pulled out of the cases I've SYEd now :laugh2:

I saved them because I am epoxying them into the stock tailcones upside down, putting lampshades on them and calling them table lamps. Gonna see if I can't decorate my entire house with jeep parts.

Hopefully tonight ill have time to paint the outer rings on my new aluminum beadlocks with the Patriot Blue color match paint I have. :D

Monday, if all work out I'll be installing new tires on said beadlocks and have a drivable jeep again.

Depending on availability I'm either going with Kevlars or KM2's. I'd prefer the BFG for styling reasons.

I'm also rather tempted to try out the General Grabbers, they look really cool, have good race history, and are about 100$ a tire cheaper. I'm just hesitant because that tire would be a gamble whereas I know I'll be happy with either the KM2 or Kevlar.

I was considering going with the DuraTrac but its damn near the same price as the MTR in the size I want, if I'm not going to save any real money I'd rather go with the more aggressive tire.

Ya id avoid the grabber unless you plan on doing HEAVY grooving.
Sucks youll have to go with a d or e rated tire cuz of the 16" but its not too bad

Yeah, D rated is fine with me. I'm not getting an E rated tire though.

My buddy is pushing Hankook M/T

I also like the look of the Yokohama Geolander M/T, Khumo Road Venture M/T, and the Nitto Mud Grappler. Still, with the amount of money I'm looking to spend I'd almost just assume spend the little bit more and get what I know.

Pulled apart 3 today at the yard that did not have that brass syncro in them either. :dunno:

That's super weird. What's the part number off the case tag? It probably starts with 5609 if I had to guess.

It doesn't look like 242 internals, but I dunno much about them.

EDIT: I didn't even think of the fact that that's a RENIX iirc. Checked the RENIX parts catalog and sure enough, there is a synchro in them. The more you know!

It's part number 8350 0992 on cases EXCEPT '90 231s with part number 5300 8207, 5300 8208, 5300 8209, 5300 8210, 5300 8211, or 5200 8212 up to transmission serial number 131163. For those special cases, it is part number 4329 526. Not that this really matters, it's junk and it looks like the 231 output shaft is as well, but it's rather interesting to me regardless. There was a lot of really screwy business going on with parts applications on the transmissions and transfer cases in the 87-90 range, almost every single time I look up a part it involves serial numbers and going through big tables of semi conflicting info.
