What are you doing to your rig - the continuing saga

I haven't gone anything yet, still have 3.55's in my rig.

Mathematically speaking to be back to stock with a 33" tall tire you need a 4.33 gear ratio on an AW4 equipped XJ. That means 4.10's are close but slightly under and 4.56's are slightly over. The only reason I said I was going with 4.0's is because I had been planning to junkyard a HP D30 and 8.8 combo for my rig. As those can be had with 4.10's it was a cheap way to regear while upgrading axles and 4.10's would be close enough for the time being.

As it stands however I got my axles from Troy (HP D30) and Trent (L/S 8.25) and they still have 3.55's in them. Now my debate is between 4.56's and 4.88's. I plan on building and subsequently towing a camping/utility trailer and while on 33's I'm confident that the 4.56's will be sufficient I don't believe so if/when I jump to a 35" tall tire. For 35's you need a 4.60 gear ratio to be mathematically back to stock so I would be basically perfect gear ratio wise mathematically but w/o any extra to make up for the increased rolling resistance/weight of the tires. Towing even a light trailer would probably bring the suck too.

My hesitance for jumping to 4.88's right away though is that until I do jump up to a 35" tall tire I'll be way over geared. On top of that, even going to a 35" the pinion gear on a D30 4.88 set is rediculously small. I'd be a bit worried about moving my locked D30's weak spot from the u-joint to the pinion.

I'll probably go 4.56's and stick with the 33's (I really do want a set of Duratrac's) as I had originally intended in my mind, but 35's are just soooo tempting.

35 inch Duratrac only come for 17 inch wheels. :-(
4:56 is what I'm going with. My old Jeep had 33 inch tires and 4:10's and it wasn't bad but not great. During that time I did tow my trailer alot so I can't wait to see what its like cause I still have the same trailer.

4.10's w/ 33's and an AW4 is like 3.55's and 33's with an AX-15. Its better than stock gears, it helps, but you definitely long for more.

My Antirock finally showed up today, so I spent a little bit after work tonight and got it installed. My light bar will be here tomorrow.

I never ran 4.10s on the AW4 jeep but I've got 3.55s, the same 33s, and an AX15 now... it does pretty ok in low range but it kinda sucks on the road.

I can't wait for it to be 5.13s or 5.38s (not sure which yet) and 35s/37s. I don't really care how high I have to rev the thing.

I didn't mind the 3.55's and 33's on the street, it was on the trail I hated them.

On that jeep I went to 4.56's, a 4:1, and 36's.

Numerically, with the P285/70s (32.8"), I would have needed 4.27:1 gears.

Went with the 4.56s and am very happy with the choice. IMO, it is better to be a tad short than tall.

I loved my 4.30's (a Dana-Spicer gear produced only for Isuzu - "thick") in the AX-15 equipped XJ, particularly when it was stroked. But you have to run LP d44's front and rear to get them...

Yeah, I agree it's better to be over geared than under. The thing with doing the math conversion is it doesn't take weight, rolling resistance, and aerodynamics into account.

Does it also make a difference that we're at a higher altitude and we have steeper inclines to throttle over than most other rigs?

I've got 31's now, with the intention to go to 33's at some point. Re-gearing is kinda higher up on my to-do list, and I only want to do it once between those 2 sets of tires.

My light bar showed up today. Got it mounted up, but I still need to wire it.

Thanks man, I've been having a blast with it!

Did a bunch of stuff today to get ready for Moab - Put a 1/2" spacer on the more saggy side of the coils. Swapped the rear leafs and adjusted the shackle angle to be 60* on both sides. Still leans about an inch, now the drivers side sits higher than the passenger. I'll just put more load on that side. Got my sway bar put back on fir the first time in 2 months - It's amazing how level it sits once the sway bar is attached. Too bad I practically have to jack one side up an inch to get them attached on level ground because of the lean. Installed 1" bump stop extensions on the rear. Trimmed my front fenders a little more since I was still rubbing on hard lock. I actually mimicked the curve of the flares and just extended the trim from the top cut Dutch did back to the flare line. Then installed some edging Dutch gave me. Came out looking super nice. Finally then installed a new CB radio, mounted a fire extinguisher, and installed a grab handle for my son to help himself climb in.

No way, the 15% loss of power at altitude and grades so steep tractor-trailers have to drop down into the lower ranges in no way effects our desire for a more aggressive gear ratio. :D
