What are you doing to your rig - the continuing saga

Just got done installing this new to me 4-1 case, and it has a click/ratchety noise in 2 or 4 hi. any words of advice?
Contact RangerRick, he has more experience than he wanted with those.

sounds like you have a bunch of hyped up mexicans with maracas in there, mang... I've heard of Tera-lows whinning, but seriously, that is some angry, but rhythmic, squirrels in there!

Got any oil in that piece of scrap?

You need to crack that thing open.

ya thats not the whine im used to hearing with those things. that sounds like loose chain man.

thats the tera low out of dutch's old grey rig, see if he knows anything

Synthetic ATF that's recommended for it. Never broken a case open before, but it looks like I might have to. Chain shouldn't be spinning in neutral right?

Kinda angry because the logic of: it worked perfect when it came out / putting it in and now its not perfect, just isn't working for me.

dutch who sold it to a guy who traded it to a guy who the PO got it from.....

did ya drive that rig? it was beat up underneath. the rear end was coming apart. and had slop back and forth. would seem irrelevant but if the rear has a bunch of slop there would be a lot of static shock on the t-case. static shock might cause........ stretched chain.

granted. i dont know WTF is wrong with it. but i pulled it out the jeep and set it on the white stand you picked it up off of when you bought it. no one checked it.

I have cracked open a case before. Its pretty easy. Let me know and I can give you a hand

Crunchy
Listen through the end; It is first gear through fourth gear.

Wow, yeah something really isn't right in there. If that's an older, first generation Tera Low box, they had some problems with the planetary gears. The pins that hold the gears would back out which would allow the gears to grind and bind. Doesn't sound like a chain to me. If it makes noise with the t-case in neutral, it has me thinking the planetary.... it's right there at the input shaft and would still spin with the rotation of the transmission.

Not sure if there are still any write ups/posts about the early 3-gear planetary Tera Low cases and their planetary issues, but I know Richard "Goatman" in California has dealt with this issue in his original rig and other members rigs. Some can be saved by tapping the gear pins back in and putting spot welds on 'em to keep 'em from backing out again. Others get damaged when the pins back out and need replaced.

Maybe call Tera Low and see if you can e-mail that vid to a customer service rep and get their input?

I agree with Tom that it sounds like a dry t-case (no oil) but I'm sure you put oil in it right? If it's making that kind of noise with the right amount of ATF in it........ it's got issues.

EDIT: Found the info Richard (Goatman) posted back in '05 about his Tera planetary:

The Tera 4 to 1 does have an Achilles heal. It can't handle speeds over 3000 rpm in high gear (2200 rpm in OD), so you have to limit your speed sometimes in low range, or just shift into high range if you're going to run quicker through a section of trail....... The weakness is the pins that hold the small pinion gears in the planetary housing. They are staked to hold them in the case, which is using a punch to make indentations around the edges of the holes in the case to hold the pinion pins in place. Mine broke one time (and I wasn't paying attention to over revving it), and one of those pins came out of the case and broke. I heard through a friend, that was using a 4 to 1 in competition, that Tera recommended putting a tack weld on the ends of those pins to hold them in the case better, so I did that and haven't had any problems with mine in the five years since doing that.

WOW!!

Time to get a refund.....

just wanted this posted again...

but really david im not trying to be rude to you with what i am saying. im just pointing out there has been some serious abuse hashed out since dutch owned it. the jeep was covered in mud inside, outside, underneath. so check for water or contaminents. im just saying to check for anything thats wrong man.. cover yer ass

The guys over at teraflex are saying its the input bearings. Im going to replace those and see if that helps, if not, Teraflex is really standing behind their product, and are saying they will go through it for me.

Im pretty sure its not the chain or the planetary gears.

Just went ahead and ordered up a new ARB compressor... And I HAVE to do something with my brakes... Bled them about 10 times and no change. pedal sinks down about 4 inches before i get any pressure... Thinkin either master cyl is about to go or rear drums suck bad. Any ideas?
