What are you doing to your rig - the continuing saga

Went to truckfest today and picked up a set of maxxis trepador radials for the YJ!!!

If anyone is going to truckfest, make sure you check out the BFG booth so you can see the "rock charger" that we built at crawlertech

tire size questions here
talking 33's from BFG Mud Terrain

33 seems to be in two sizes? am i right in the 33x10.50 is same height but skinny(er) tire than the 33x12.50 size?
what width wheels for these respective tire sizes? i d prolly want in 15 inch size.

thanks

You almost have it right, but the second number is the sidewall thickness. The 33" tire only comes in one width size, go buy the 12.5mm sidewalls if you do a lot of rock crawling where you might puncture a tire. The 10.5mm sidewalls are obviously a lighter tire and easier to balance. As far as rim width for a 33" tire, i'd run a 12-15" wide rim if it was me...more contact patch that way.

It's a matter of personal preference on the width. Many swear by the narrower tire for snow and ice. My preference is that the rim should probably be around 2" narrower than the tire. I don't like aluminum rims, they scratch and break and cost more. My favoite is the AR767

You can also run a 285/75r16, which is what I run, it's about a 33x12.5 iirc. They stuff into MJ fenders absolutely no problem with factory bumpstops, they did wear like 1/2-3/4" of fender flare material off at the trailing edge but hey, rubbin's racing. On the front I had to trim the fenders to the line where the stock flare ends and fold the pinch seams over - again, stock bumpstops on there too.

I'd rather trim than go higher or bumpstop more. Works out quite nicely.

i lifted the rear end and ran into trouble up front but i need to drive i to work so i just put it back together ass high... looks good with the steelies and snows!
