What are you doing to your rig - the continuing saga

thanks kastein for your input. iwant to go spring over, but agree on 6 might be too much. i think i ll take care of the rear first and then see how the front sits by jacking it up till it is level and measure and do more thinking on it. i also need to do some front axle repairs as everything is shot LOL i do want an adjustable track rod with a heim on the frame side. i think i ll hit Frank up about the track rod and see what he has. he is a good guy i have bought from him before and want to keep my money local if i can.

I'd get an overload leaf in there muy pronto, the stock MJ pack won't like the stress of spring over for long...

As long as the leaf packs are properly bump-stopped, MJ leaf packs are much more resilient than XJ packs. Overload leaves would help act similar as a bump stop I suppose, but man are they rock/debris grabbers. Lots of guys on ComancheClub run SUA with stock leaves with no issues. Stick shift guys have mentioned a bit more of a noticeable surge with the shifting as axle wrap is increased with SUA but otherwise, its a good way to lift.

Just don't use blocks to get more lift after doing the SUA. Use shackles or lift kit springs.

Seems to me when Hinson went spring over axle, with stock springs, he ended up needing 4.5" front coils. That was a long time ago, so my memory could be wrong. :)

so the shop owner tells me there is an MJ tailgate at work upstairs new in box. our shop used to do a LOT of jeep work back in the early 90's...there are litierally 2 tons of parts upstairs and prolly 150 bumpers piled all over. of course all money for any parts would be his, i am just on the fence if it would be worth doing all that work for him. i assume hatches tailgates and header panels would be important jeep parts. but tons of other makes too. what do you buyers and sellers think? i would hate to take on the job and all i end up finding are 2 cherokee tail lights.

Tell me when to be there..... I'll help sift through the pile for the chance at finding new Comanche parts! Would love that tailgate......

Gonna be up north tomorrow as a matter of fact......

hehehe
i got some fish to fry first. maybe i can do part of it and get rid of the mountain of used bumpers and let collins plating have them. i think they will give 5 bucks per as a core to be a shop credit..
i ll post up what i find .

Just be sure to NOT send any MJ bumpers away.......

I'm your Huckelberry for that tailgate though......

Soooo.. what I was hoping wasn't going to happen did. Even with a Champion all aluminum 3 core rad, and several different fan options I've tried, the 5.9 is producing more heat than the radiator can dissipate.
Around town it's fine, no problem keeping under thermostat temp but get on the highway it creeps up and up until I have to pull over to let it cool off, especially pulling a grade.

Time for some creative heat exchanging ideas. :(

an oil cooler may be able to help shed heat. if you run an auto trans a trans cooler not plumbed into the rad tank may help too. last option may be a smaller rad mounted under the body somewhere or roof with a fan and all the associated plumbing and extra coolant.
and maybe a hood with scoop or louvers can help too. maybe a tall v8 type rad in between the frame rails instead of the 4.0 short but wide on top of the frame rails.if it was between the rails, the thickness can be increased and the difference can be spaced to the front side. did you remove all the AC junk?

BTDT with oil cooler.. no change in temps whatsoever
have a hood scoop, hood is spaced in rear
trans cooler is external only
a/c is present and functional.. cant do away with that. mama says no bueno

I know it needs more water capacity... that's the challenge.

sounds like you know what to do.
do you think a thicker rad would work between the frame rails and maxed out for height and as low as you dare? a 4.0 makes alot of heat i am amazed a v8 makes more than a 4.0 LOL

if you can find a rad from the engine and see if something similar can be found and will fit. it may take some fab work but i am sure a v8 rad from something will fit in there and work. to rail width liely will be dictated by the engine width. since grands came with 4.0 and v8 that might be a good one to start with.
you may have to trim out the front crossmember and make it fit, then fab a means to tie the rails back together again and keep it from blocking air flow. it can be done and not cost an arm and one testicle dont get discouraged.

My take on this is that it only overheats at highway speeds. This is pretty much opposite of most overheating. Normally the air flow at highway speeds is sufficient to remove the heat even from poorly performing systems. This implies that either you need more airflow through the system, adding vents for example, a larger heat transfer surface, although not overheating in traffic would seem to negate this, maybe, or more fluid flow through the heat transfer device.

I'd add vents to the hood, before I'd do anything else. If that doesn't do, you either need a bigger radiator, or a better water pump. More fluid volume(mass) shouldn't make any difference, unless the system still has air in it.

A Durango 5.9 r/t rad would fit nicely between the 'frame' if it wasn't for the steering gear box. I'm also contemplating some kind of heat exchanger between the frame rail and rocker guard. I swapped rads with a plastic tank single row one I had and it cools better than the champion. Go figure.
20 degrees cooler and it'll be good to go.
