Ah, like moths to a flame ... ;)

Just spent a full week in Moab wheelin in my golf cart. Did over 120 miles, did Hell's Revenge, Fins & Things, Flat Iron Mesa, Behind the Rocks, Steel Bender, Strike Ravine, & Green Day. Used less than a tank of gas ( which is 8 gallons ), never winched once, and never put a wrench on it the entire trip. :D Twas a good trip!!

front end on the WJ is finally pretty much de-clunked... after a good reaming from FrankZ :eyes:, the pitman arm no longer has a wiggle, and I found a loose sway mount to boot!

Oh Lordy Lordy...I have gone against my own rule of not backyard engineering things.

After taking the rig out for its first 100+ mile ride over the weekend, the steering was still really jittery at highway speeds; so I added my old steering stabilizer to help things out.

The Ruff Stuff 1 ton steering system leaves barely any room to mount the SS, so I butt-welded a 1/2" Grade 8 to the 7/8" Grade 8 bolt for the Track Bar. I did 2 passes with .35 wire so I know I got good penetration. I'm not sure how long this thing will last without a double sheer, but it'll do for now until I get my new Dana 60. :)

Overall adding this made a HUGE difference and I'm loving my rig again.

How much of that 1/2-inch bolt changed color? Where did the colors stop?

It was an old bolt so the different color is just wear and rust that I brushed off.

Oh Jim.....you better start tanning with rigging like that

Oh whatever...it's a secondary stress point. It'll hold until the end of the summer.

We used to tack 1/2-inch bolts at work, until they started breaking where the discoloration stopped. It does not seem to be a problem with bigger bolts, probably because they have more material to dissipate any heat we put to them.

BTW, we use only high tensile bolts, SAE Grade 5, ATSM A-325, or higher grade.

If the bolt made it to torque, it'll probably be OK...

dudes i am plotting my first lift of any sort.
spring over rear.
gonna be a piece it together from junk sort of a deal. what lift of springs should i be looking for for the front?4 or 6 inch? the rear of the MJ has some shackles that added ...hmm ... 1 and a 1/2 maybe 2 inches. so that plus whatever spring over will give me.
thanks--

carry on

I likewise had some grade 8 s snap right at the bluing line when welded to my d44 under the xj as shock mounts... Repeatedly.

Might just be me but 6" is too tall... I am right at 3-4" or so with 33s and wouldn't go any higher. In fact I'm going to try and keep it right where it is when I go to 37s.

I went with some unknown set of 4" coils I bought from a friend for 30 bucks and a set of Rustys 4.5" SUA MJ leafs. Didn't want enough lift to go spring over axle and my leafs were totally shot anyways.
