We are coming to CO in July, where do we go?

Hey guys, so the wife, me, and 4 of our friends( couples ) decided to celebrate all of our anniversaries together this year, and go on a road trip. At first, we were going to rent an RV, but HOLY SHIT BALLS thats expensive. No thanks. SO, we all settled on everyone meeting at my place here in Iowa, then road tripping over to CO, and renting a cabin. Cost will be split 3 ways, so its not too huge of an issue, $100-150/night after splitting is about what we all want to spend.

I'll be bringin the XJ, my buddy his Taco. We want to be able to relax and enjoy the beautiful mountain air at night, and during the day go exploring, fishing, and trail riding(nothing extreme, his truck is stock, my XJ will ahve a RC lift, and we all know how the RC lifts fall apart :rof: lol)

Right now, im looking at Estes park, and there are some NICE cabins for under $300/night, but no idea what the area is like, and if it holds the type of exploring we want to do .

SO what say you guys? We want MOUNTAINS, trails that will take us to BREATHTAKING scenery, and fishing.

If you are staying in Estes Park, Telluride is an 8 hour drive.

Minor offroad that can be done by a car, but still pretty, is to run Fall River Road. That is if they open it after the flood.

There is middle St. Vrain Creek about 30 minutes away. If I remember, when I get back to my hotel, I will send you the name of a good book on Northern Colorado Trails.

I think he was considering estes park, not set on it.

I was suggested staying and wheeling the telluride area

Estes isn't a bad starting point if you want to enjoy the northern part of the state -- lots of good scenic wheeling up the Poudre Canyon and into northpark. Telluride/Ouray is super and just what you're describing as what you're looking for, but the price of lodging will likely be higher.

Thanks, I'm having a hard time finding any cabins to rent in Telluride, although lots of condo's. Im honestly not sure of the difference in northern or southern parts of the states or what each offers haha

Look in Ouray instead of Telluride -- less snooty, and likely cheaper, plus more rustic and likely to have cabins available. Just the other side of the pass from Telluride. If you stay down there you'll be running Black Bear into Telluride and Imogene back, or vice versa (Black Bear is a one-way) either way.

Check this place out in Ouray. We've stayed here a couple times and it is bad ass! We spent around $500/ night, but it was worth every penny. Only a few miles outside of Ouray, and you CANNOT beat the trails or scenery down there. My favorite place in the world!

**Looks like it is currently for sale, but still being rented out**

Thanks! Just got off the phone with one of the other guys, Aparantly he is getting out in April, abs I didn't know this. So cost is becoming an issue now. The idea was thrown out ti do it all in SD, my buddy lives in rapid City. I know there are some pretty beautiful places up there but I don't know if it can be as awesome as CO

Not to pee in your Wheaties, but July is tourist season. Premium lodging will command premium prices.

Frisco area is nice and central if its going to be guys and ladies. guys can fish trail ride for a day and the women can shop at the Silverthorne outlets. your close to Breckenridge run up I-70 and to copper mt resort or another 30 min past up to Leadville. And or north to Granby area a lot of rental cabins that way and a day trip over trail ridge into Estes park for the day.

Could not agree more!!

We do the same thing you are doing every two years. A few families go to Silverton. Id strongly suggest you check out this website and talk to Nicole.

It cost us about $1700 for 8 nights for a house big enough to comfortably sleep 12-14 people. We share cooking duties and only eat out a couple nights a week.

We have looked at houses in every other town around that area but nobody can touch the prices we have found there. We have stayed in both the Wolf House and Aspen Manor. Both have been recently remodeled, have nice TVs and internet. When you break the cost up between four families you can't touch the price even at a crappy hotel.

If you are wanting to see the San Juans I think Silverton has it all over Telluride and Ouray too. It's smaller, the people aren't stuck up assholes like they are in the busier towns and its way less crowded.

Awesome thanks!! I just got two testing dates for two different correctional facilities here in the next two months so we will see what life brings lol. Hopefully we will still be able to come over

I fully agree. Silverton is a nice place- Telluride, however, is full of smug.
