Wanted: battery

My red top is dead and I don't have the money to replace it new. Anybody have a group 34 battery with side and top terminals that is in decent shape they would be willing to part with for not a lot of coin?

If you are going to end up buying a battery, use the Autozone account and get a good discount. I got their Duralast Platinum AGM for around $130. I can probably score you a virtually new battery for around $40. People buy a new battery and find out that it wasn't the battery and then return them back to the store. I can usually score one within a few weeks. PM me if you are interested.
 
Autozone sells batteries and brand name batteries. If and when parts and or tools are needed I'll use our Chapter's account. This is a definite plus for members here. Again thanks. from: mechbullxj.

Thanks, I might do that. I'm pretty sure it's the battery though. It's at 2.1V and my charger won't even touch it.
 
Put a trickle charger on it for at least over night. It might take a few days, even. Once you get it up to 10 Volts or so, a regular charger will work. Optima's don't like coming back from the dead, but they will if you tickle them, er, trickle.
 
I've never been able to bring an Optima back from the dead. Tried the multi-day trickle charge..... nada.

But...... they do bring good money at the recycle center. I got $25 for the Optimas I've brought to them.

After work, I'll try to remember to look at the 3 good batteries I have Doug. I can't recall if any of them have the top and side posts.
 
Yeah, well, I've done it numerous times. I mean, over and over, redtop and yellowtop. I'm on my 3rd Optima. The first did die eventually. The second redtop still takes a charge but it's about 1/2 or less of it's original capacity. I've trickle charged it many times. My current yellow top I killed, took it back to Advance, they got it to charge. I've since drained it to nothing, and trickle charged it back to life a few times. Trickle charge it, or take it to Advance, it's the best first step.
 
LOL....... I wasn't challenging you Fred. Just stating my experience with trying to revive an Optima. :moon:
 
I tried my trickle charger on it (Battery Tender Jr) and it just errored out and refused to charge.

Maybe I'll take it down to Advance and see if they can get it to take a charge. Thanks for the thought on the recycling Yella, that goes some way toward the new one.
 
you can usually zap batterys a few times with jumper mode let it run for 10 secs turn it off
let it run for 20 secs turn it off usually do it untill you hit 60 secs (it will release all the build up on the walls inside the battery). fill it back up with battery acid and then charge it over night on 2amps.
 
Alright Fred, I'm giving you a chance. I found my local Ace had a 'dumb' 2A/10A charger so I picked it up and am letting it sit on 2A for a day or two to see how it does.
 
I built an old school charger using a 100w light bulb, a diode, and a cut up extension cord. I pull the battery out of the vehicle and then connect it up. Warning the open circuit voltage can knock the crap out of you, or worse if you get across it.

The diode converts it to pulsing DC and the light bulb limits the current. The pulsing DC works on knocking loose the sulfation in the battery. If it is a wet cell normal car battery, mixing a touch of Epsom salts in water, then adding it to the battery can also help.

Unless you know what you are doing and do your research, do not try this at home.
 
I just use a couple of less than one amp chargers from other purposes. I don't know if 2 amps will work. Take it to Advance Auto. They brought back my yellow top when trickle charging wouldn't work.
 
Good news so far. My new dumb 2/10 charger on 2A for 6 hours brought it back to above 10V (I read 12.8V while charging). I then put my Battery Tender Jr on it which was much happier and started charging. Now it's just a wait to see how long it takes to charge and settle. I think this rig is going to be on a battery tender leash for the rest of it's life.
 
When mine wasn't a daily driver, I put in a cigarette lighter socket, and used a 15 watt solar panel that I had for camping. Seemed to work, I just had to remember to plug it in. :)

Where, and, how long ago?

I was at my local recycle yesterday. I pointed to a pallet with two and asked how much they pay for the Optimas. His reply was "17 cents a pound."
