First thing: The blinker fluid is topped off and in great shape, so I don't think that is it.....
So, today on the freeway, the '01 jeep started acting funny (slight random hesitation while cruising at 65mph). When I went to pull over, I noticed that my blinkers were flashing at irregular intervals (click...click..........click.click..). After some troubleshooting, this is what I have found:
-Hazards work fine 100% of the time.
-With engine on, blinkers behave as described above (irregular intervals).
-With engine off, but key in the "run" position, blinkers do not work at all (I hear the combination flasher click one time when the switch is turned). There are no turn indicators displayed on the instrument cluster.
Coincidentally, while I was poking around under the steering column, I noticed that this part (see circled image below) was extremely hot to the touch. I am assuming this is the shift lock solenoid, but that does not seem like it should be getting hot to me (what the hell do I know).
Is any of this related? Can anyone suggest a possible problem (or even better, a solution)? I don't even know where to begin to check for bad grounds. I have the wiring diagrams, and I have looked them over several times, but I am unable to draw any conclusions from it all (I'm no spark chaser). At this time, there do not appear to be any other electrically related anomalies (just the blinkers, the weird hesitation when coasting at highway speeds, and the super hot shift lock solenoid). Thanks in advance for any help!!!!!
