Valve Job Cost?

Not that any of you care.. but I ended up buying a j-yard head for $85 in Houston. With this head.. which appeared to be in much better shape than my original (no erosion on the valve faces).. I tried lapping the valves and they still leaked. So I took the head to a machine shop. They quoted me $390 to fix the head. They said it has been overheated, and was warped .15.. and that several of the valves were "burnt" (pitted). Also several of the valve springs were too weak and needed to be replaced. They also told me the wall between the valve seat and the water jackets is pretty thin and that when they recut the seats they run the risk of going through. They also have to shim the valve springs after recuting the seats to correct the height.

So there is was no way I was paying nearly $400 to fix that head. I ended up buying a "reman" head from "Blaine Motor Works" in Dallas for $160. The core charge was an additional $120, so I used the J-yard head for my core. Anyways... working on bolting that on now.

Did the blain head come with rockers and springs?

That machine shop sounded like they were getting ready to sink the valves if they needed to shim the springs. I don't know why they were worried about going through teh casting while doing a valve job.. they shouldn't be taking off that much material.

And stop trying to lap the valves in. It will cause you nothing but problems.
