I keep seeing them around Bishopville, SC. Anyone know what base they might be out of? I would guess Shaw, but I thought they were primarily a Marine arcraft.

The LAT routed takes them over that way for training.

Low Altitude Training

They are coming from us at the air station in Jacksonville. The flight out that way is 60 minutes or so one way.

USAF CV-22's are stationed at Hurlbert Field in Florida and Kirtland in Alberquerque.

Me either. You'd be amazed who they let work on those things . . .

:looney:

I heard some <edit> from NAXJA wrenches on those things, and we all know the quality of work around here.

They don't have any based out of Beaufort or Cherry Point?

If I'd stayed in, I might've ended up working with you. When I was thinking about putting in my re-enlistment package, I was going to lat move to crew chief for Osprey, 53, or Huey. But I decided to get out instead.

My friend informed me that there are plans to mobilize another Osprey squadron to Yuma. It's a blast to watch those guys here practice out in the Grants area. Personally, I have more faith in the V-22 than I have in the CH-46.

Well that makes sence then. They buzeed the house yesterday and freaked one of the twins out. The other was too mezmorised to say anything. What is considered LAT? I'd say they were under 500' easy. I have been told that during Vietnam the field in front of the house was used as a drop zone. I heard there are pictures somewnere here in town of one of the airdrops too.

I'd believe that.
There's a transport squadron of C-130s stationed about 30 miles from where I grew up. During the summer you'd see c-130s running mock air drops in the farmers fields behind our house. They werre under 500' easy, and really moving, at least for a c-130.

I haven't heard that. There are currently stand-up squadrons being fielded at MCAS Miramar. At one point, VMX-22 might have gone to Yuma, but financially it never became a reality. Now that that squadron is also the OT&E representative for the CH-53K, I don't think they're moving anywhere. Maybe Cherry Point.

Cherry Point is fixed wing and skid overflow. 467 is there now and plans to stand-up 567 are in the works as part of the 4 bladed transition.

We follow all the FAA rules for flying over residential areas, but if your area is an approved FAA training route for LAT, you'll see them right on the deck.

When we flew out of Kuwait last year, we had a specific route to follow and the CEILING was 500 feet. Some juking and jiving almost made me sick, which doesn't happen very often.

I'm not a big fan of ground transition guys, but that's because a lot of them have created a bad stereotype.

Just depends on how much pride you're willing to swallow when a LCpl is teaching you your job.

I was airwing, worked the TAOMs, and sadly still a LCpl, so no pride issues there. :D

You could be right. My friend who told me that the 22 squadron being mobilized out at Yuma is a hornet driver, so it's not exactly his community and it could have been just scuttlebutt. I'm surprised that they are still mobilizing units to Miramar. I thought that the surrounding communities had put up enough fuss to make the Marines look else where for new units to be stationed at.

They're not new units, they're transitioning -46 squadrons, so the people can't complain. It's a 1 for 1 swap.

ok so heres the skinny on the flying coffins. they are replacing the 46's. they are NOT coming to Cherry Point.

i work on the airfield and the only thing that might be coming here might be some fast movers.

LOL @ BA! :twak:

I try to be impartial and not get personal with my comments about the aircraft. I'd appreciate it if you'd do the same.

Considering I'm pretty sure that your friends weren't buried in one like mine were, you should watch your damn mouth.

He might be joking about the nick but I can also see your point red. It's tough to loose close friends and have someone belittle it.
