UPS rant

The one here is about a mile away from a part of town that's actually had a TV show made not long ago depicting the different gangs that reside there...

As far as UPS, i think it depends on where you are located. I was a driver helper for them this last winter season, the driver I was with was F'n awesome, been on the same route for 20+ years. A few thing have changed ( I know because I grew up in my area), but he had it down. I also worked with a couple of other drivers and they even though they were newer, knew what they were doing. The center manager was on his game as well.
I personally do not ship UPS unless I need to. USPS more recent due to their flat-rate shipping (only domestic for me). I also used to work for FedEx and they have never done me wrong. Used to use them exclusively as I got a fatty discount. Do not get as good a discount now, so depends on the the parts/items I am sending.
As far as receiving packages, UPS has not done me wrong in my current place of residing. The FedEx drivers around here seem like they could use a few extra brain cells.

I ship primarily with UPS for items over 3 LBS, or ones that don't fit in the flat rate boxes.

I have had less than 1% of shipments damaged or non deliverable. My system prints the labels exactly as the customer enters it on the website, the only part I enter is the weight.

UPS gives me better rates than FedEx and I like there software better.

Oh and the connivence of having one driver for both air and ground makes things easy.

I have my packages marked, "Deliver between 9am and 4pm". The office at my apartment will hold them till I get home. But both FedEx and UPS insist on only delivering after 7:30 at night and then return to sender after the third attempt. I'm an over the road professional driver. I'm gone three or more weeks at a time and live alone.

Have you contacted your local UPS center? Usually, doing this and communicating this to them helps.
