I am about to swap out the transmission in my 1998 4.0 2wd XJ and figured I might as well do the rear main. I see it is a 2 pieces and the oil pan has to come out, so I figure I should get everyone's favorite. Victor Reinz apparently has an improved design. I also see Felpro SKF, and Mahle. I have already read a few writeups but I figure someone has had good or bad experiences with different brands.

I put Felpro in both my '96 and the '97 VarmintMobile. No issues. And no points of comparison. I would be curious what Victor Reinz has.

IIRC the Felpro required an anaerobic sealant between the two halves. That was something I had to order.

A brass punch is a tool you want to have on hand. IIRC 5/32" was the size I wanted, and in a long format at that. Of course, if you have the transmission out then that might remove the obstacle which made me want the long format.

No real advantage to doing it while swapping the trans, aside from motivation to get er done all at once. Trans doesn't need to come out to do the rear main seal. Of course, confirm the seal is bad and the leak isn't from higher up first since all the major leaks tend to flow back and drip off the back anyway.
