So I was sitting in my garage two weeks ago drinkin a beer and working on my Jeep when my wife walks out. After the usual small talk she tells me I look like an old man driving it and I needed trade it in on something a little more updated. After my "HELL NO I love this thing" response she laughed and went back inside.

Now that my pride has been busted I look over my rig and start to think she may be right. This is my work so far what do you guys think.

Before any work.

When I removed all of the woodgrain and mouldings I was left with holes down both sides that needed to be filled.

Then a couple of dents on the hood and a few in the doors.

The back hatch.

As you can see every panel had holes from the trim and some rust under a couple of flares..

And after holes were filled and painted.

Thats it so far once I get the rest of the Jeep painted I will update prob tonight. I also picked up a set of old style alum Wagoneer wheels. Like the General Lee. I will post pics of them tomorrow. So what do you all think so far? Have I put a little style back in the old girl or should I have left it alone?

What kind of filler are you using? any tricks you've picked up along the way this far?

Looks like you're doing a good job thus far!

Personally I think the wood-grain makes the rig stand out and would never consider losing mine, but I guess it's not for everyone...

The wood grain was a decal. Also a ROYAL pain to remove. You can buy the kit for about $70.00 a roll. I was tossing around the idea of removing it for a long time and couldnt make up my mind. After my wife and I discussion I said screw it pull it off. That took the largest amount of time. I used a heat gun and carb cleaner to get the glue off.

I used a brand called Polyfiller. You mix it like Bondo. Only difference is it has small fibers like fiberglass that make it a lot stronger. It will also flex with the metal so it shouldnt crack. As always you never want to put it on any thicker than 1/16 of an in.

Also a word of advice. White paint hides alot!! LOL

:us:

By the way here are my new rims.

I cant decide if I want to put pin stripes down the sides or not what do you all think?
:patriot:

those are the same wheels that came on my cherokee. I dont know what makes them "wagoneer" style

They look like old covered wagon wheels.

Dude, you look like a poor soccer mom without the woodgrain

LOL Thanks.

Finished!!

Yea. The pic is old. It has been finished for several monthes now. After the server crashed I lost intrest in the thread. I lost a LOT of progress pics and what not. I will post some more in a bit. I have since replaced the tires and added hood vents from a Z-34 lumina.

looks good. funny, i have the exact same wagoneer limited. was thinking of striping the woodgrain, but heard it was real hard to remove. what worked for you? BTW, the wheels look awsome. from all the XJ wheels out there, those are the best looking. do you know if they have the same backspacing as the ones you replaced?

Not sure on the back spacing. I just know I love these wheels.LOL Yea when I found this Jeep I had ONE in mind. First it had to be a wagoneer, second it had to be white, and third it had to have tan interior. It took a while but here she is.

well i really cant complain too much, i got the jeep for free. it was sitting on my property with a bad ABS system. ive been buying parts to fix her up. new booster/master, lift parts, tires, wheels, ect. maybe i will have a friend check the junk yards for the tan interior pieces.
so how did you get that wood grain vynil off? heat gun? i am still debating wether to keep or not. it IS kinda cool to keep it "Old School". if i do ill have to find some wheels like yours. but for now i am going to use a set of aftermarkets (15x8) i had sitting in the shop. came off a ford ranger.
how did you "fill" all the trim holes? weld, or body filler? all in all it looks good. definatly looks up-dated, and thats what your wife wanted. good job.

Just of the installation. I need to get some pics of it completed. I also installed the drip pans and routed them to either side of the engine bay. How did you put yours in the front? Did you cut the hood braces?

No, I didn't cut the braces. Just bolted through them & drilled some drain holes.
