update, 36s on 4" lift.

up front, all the plastic garbage got tossed, I also hammered the pinch seam on the floor flat

Is there any downside to hammering that seam flat or any loss in structural integrity? I don't think there would be, but I worry anyway.

I Want To Know Why Do You Do All That??
Do You Have "lifting" Issues Or Just Lazy To Crate Something That Looks Nice And Clean?
What's Up With Those Dinky Rear Fender Flares?.....???

looks awsome. im gonna stuff some q78's undermine soon. just got a d44 so gotta take care of that first. by the way, i remember you from the chicken run, Im artie i had a bid red cherokee with the a spare tire carrier (swing out). I want to know why you suck so much. I would absolutely love to have 36's on 4" of lift. And look at his handle, cheap XJ. He does keep it cheap, and trys to keep it functional while drowned in it's cheapness :). No reason to spend 1000's on a lift to fit 36's, why not just spend a day or two with some sheet metal, cutting wheel, and a welder. I think the lift is the lazy way to go. _nicko_

cheapxj,
do u have d30 and d35 front ad rear?
also, what 4" lift did u get?
did u go 3 1/2 and use spacers? u think if i get 3 1/2 and use 2 inch spacer, would that setup allow the same tire clearence as yours?

thanks for the info.

i just bought an 87 xj 4 door and am excited to get it going.
d30 front w/ 760 joints and welded caps.

44 rear w/ a bent flange and hosed pinion bearing :(

the lift is: rancho 3" coils + 1.5" spacers up front, dakota leaves + MJ shackles in the rear. and this will NOT work on a 4-door without SERIOUSLY limiting rear uptravel. even after all the cutting, I still have extended bumpstops in the rear (about 1.5"). without them, it would rub.

I gotta add about an inch of bumpstop up front yet.

if you just bought it... start out w/ 3.5" and 31's and get to know the XJ a little better offroad before goin nuts like this.

I'd rather trim than lift anymore at this point. I'd also rather trim than extend my bumpstops, though. That is not Cheap's only vehicle, so why not just cut it up and make a trail rig with it?
And on the flares, in some places, you need flares to keep legal.

my junk has no structural integrity left, but I really doubt that the pinch seam there does much to the structure as a whole.

cutting out the rear end, and removing all the bracing that I did, that did weaken the body a little. but it's getting caged once it gets warm, so again... I really don't care for now.

It's a trail rig. anything "nice and clean" would get "beaten and destroyed" within a month.

Pretty don't get yer ass home, and "nice and clean" is purely an opinion.

The dinky rear fender flares were to keep the cops off my ass on the drive there. 75* of tread must be covered. and that's pretty damn close (71* to be exact) still don't have the trailer or the tow rig ready (tow rig overheats  ) so I hadda drive it.

lots of the stuff I run has sidehills and off-camber stuff that would probably make you drop a chalupa in your seat (notice the strap tied around my b-pillar in the one pic. that was an anchor to keep me from rolling.) where I wheel, COG, and keeping the diffs off the ground is more important than breakover angle.

when my junk progresses more (I won't say when it's done, because it's never done) there will be some cleaning up of the sheetmetal done. I had two weeks of vacation and wanted to get something done, and FAWKIN WHEEL!!!

and to the lazy comment... I have 3 Jeeps, I'm a fulltime engineering student (3.9gpa), I have a damn-near fulltime Job and I am basically supporting myself (in RI, 2nd highest cost of living in the nation) with what little "free-time" I have.

ARTIE!!! what's happenin' dude!

Earle's talkin 'bout runnin Q78s as well. I think they would actually fit into the rear wheelwell without going through all the tubbing nonsense that I had to go through (35.5x10.5 or something like that)

I'm hopin to bring the trail rig back up this way after spring break. Gotta make the MJ not overheat, and get my trailer legal. i don't think it would hold up to the drive anymore.

it's gonna get cut up and caged over the summer, and get some real axles underneath it. I get sick of taking the strap on stuff I know I can throttle out of, but the fear of pullin a Steve move keeps me from doin that :rof:

how do you feel about relocating the gastank, moving the axle back and THEN cutting? that's what ya gotta do on a 4-door. (or lift it to the sky)

33's will stuff fine on a 4-door w/ the pinch seam notched and hammered over without losing too much uptravel.
