WAGES - This one I can see - a 3% annual raise is hardly a COLA raise (Cost Of Living Allowance) - that one should reallly be 6% or so if it's to be a living wage. Possibly more, if the costs of fuel are going to spiral more (unless somehow all these people transit to work - does MTA maintain a 24-hour schedule?)

lets see.. I work for a 8 billion dollar company (worldwide) and I have never recieved more than a 4% raise in a 12 month period.. 9/11 pushed it to 18 months for that year. That 4% is at the discretion of managers.
I am going to say... STFU and get back to work.

Unions were necessary before Labor Laws, but are useless now and are sucking the life out of the American industry.
UAW is killing GM with $1600+ taked onto every vehicle for union related costs. No wonder Toyota will be #1 next year. Go Union...

Just wanted to check: Are you counting the hours spent at home on evenings and weekends grading papers and compiling work plans? The starting salary for teachers around here is in the 20k range. Pretty tight as a yearly salary, let alone converted to hourly wages.

People that get into teaching know damn well what the pay is when they go into it.....Then they choose to bitch about it. they do a service that is underpaid in the beginning but down the road they do pretty well. heck most of them can retire after 20 years.

does anyone consider it almost unconstitutional that union membership is required for some jobs... even government ones? Or that the required union dues can be spent on political campaigns without the consent of the individual member? A proposition to remove this from California was shot down because unions paid for the campaign! The opposition didn't have the $. It's self-perpetuating...

Is everyone aware of the shift in labor unions, moving from the private sector to the public sector?

What are some main goals of labor unions, and the means to achieve those goals?

If recruitment/expansion was part of the answer to the second question, why would it be important within the context of existing in the public sector?

What complications and conflicts of interest can you think of by the very nature, growth, and goals of public sector labor unions?

To all of the above, Public sector is not interested in a profit. Operating capitol is just a tax increase away. Bankruptcy is not as likely for the public sector. Public sector can be the least likely to comply with labor laws.
The bottom line is that the unions greed sees the public sector as having deep pockets that are easily held hostage.

Oh truer words have never been spoken.....Nothing makes me sicker then listening to teachers whine about how much they make. Most of them are right about average for the local ecconomy and they get three months off paid.

The United States has some of the worst schools of the modern world....if they want to get paid more....they can do more to teach our kids.

what are you HIGH? my mother was a teacher for 26 years and was an 11 month employee. witch means she had 1 month off durring the summer but she did not get paid for it. in va you are eithe an 11 month employee or a 9 month employee. the only year round employed are the superviser of schools and his staff, as well as mantiance. the month she was off she had a part time job as a seamstress making things for friends. so know what you are talking about before you open your mouth. also you want your kids to lear more? then sit them down and teach them some respect. and not just for teachers. for police officers, fire fighters and ems personell. learning starts at home and people like you want to blame teachers for your kids being bumb while your kids are sitting infront of the tv playing x box or psII, instead of doing homework or studying. how about making schools a safe place to go and learn? thats why my mom retired. they had to put police offices in the schools because of kids bringing guns and knives to school. so before you blame others maybe you need to step back and say "what have i dont to encourage my kids to learn?" not "we need to blame the teachers for our kids being so dumb." rant off.
