I haven't read this whole thread, and probably won't have time this morning, but I hear this complaint about teachers and their salaries all the time. So my question is a simple one:

Do you think that it should NOT be possible for a teacher to make a living as a teacher?

see thats my beef....the teachers around here make good money and yet they still whine that they want more.

We did the door panels and the vibe/corolla seat frames (329/330 models) and later all of the seat frames after we stole Tacoma from you I have been to Trend before but I don't recall any of the people I met. Most of my croos-funtional teams within GAMMA was with JCI, Injex, Plasticon, Amtex, Dana, and Arvin Sango

Sorry,:doh:the vast majority of all mermaids have some degree or another of webbing between their fingers. That's my point. What you have just said is that you value the job of teaching so little that you believe a teacher is not a professional who should be able to make his entire living at his profession, but should take another job to supplement it. Not every job is measured in hours. Would you demand the same of a brain surgeon who only actually wields the knife a few hours a day? How about an actor? By the way, do you know any good teachers? If you do, you may be surprised at how much time they spend on their work in addition to what you see. This includes not only work for which they are paid but students are not present, but work before and after hours, as well as supplemental education for recertification, advancement, etc.

Do you really want teachers to take the same attitude toward their job as you do? Clock in and clock out? Do you want only teachers who are unable to do better than 75 percent of a year's pay doing something else?

Read the entire thread and you will know how many teachers I know. All I am saying is break it down hourly and its not that bad and there are ways to make more money, if they choose.

Very cool. I was in China when that went down, and came back to start my own operation. I was with Cowden, not so much Trend.

Just wanted to check: Are you counting the hours spent at home on evenings and weekends grading papers and compiling work plans? The starting salary for teachers around here is in the 20k range. Pretty tight as a yearly salary, let alone converted to hourly wages.

exactly...my wife is a teacher and she works more than I do..oh yeah and she is a non union teacher. lets see makes 20k union teacher in same town with same experience makes about 5-6k more. But it is her choice she chose the non union school. I never try to push union propaganda on someone but I will stand up and defend the unions. The still serve a vital role in most business.

What rank is your brother in law, how long has he been in? Is he married and if he is where does he live?, On base or off, which base? What's his job? Lots goes into your pay. My base pay as an E3 with over years was 1641/month. That was after getting raises every year. At first it was only 1585. That comes out to 19692 at the end of my time in. After I got married, I started collecting an additional 1146 a month for housing expenses because there was no way I'd afford anything in the SoCal/San Diego area on just my base pay. I just got out in August, 2005. If your bro has been in for a good many years, he a)has seniority/time in service and likely time in grade, and/or b) might be an officer. An officer, 2ndLt fresh from OCS less than a year in makes way more money than I did. An E8 with 15-20 yrs makes way more than I did. Spelling like a retard makes you look stupid, but speaking out of your a$$ on something you know nothing of just confirms it.

Huntsville, TX is a family town. The biggest employers are the prisons and the university. The folks who work at these institutions have kids. The Huntsville ISD is an excellent education system for these kids and a number of our friends are teachers. They teach, not because of the cushy 9-month schedule but because of a dedication they possess to see that the children of their community get the best education possible. Before teaching came up in this thread it never occurred to me to wonder if Huntsville ISD is a union shop or not. I know that none of the teachers we know have ever mentioned a union. I'll have to ask them about that.

What I do know is this: 1) The 20-30k pay scale will not support a family on its own. A teacher's spouse has to work. A single teacher has a very hard time. 2) The teachers we know spend an inordinate amount of time outside the classroom. Way more than I would be willing to spend for 20-30k, but then I don't have their level of dedication - I'm lazy. I like to clock out and sit down and have a beer. I don't give a crap if Johnny's spelling quiz gets graded or not. The teachers we know are obsessed with serving their kids. 3) The teachers we know spend an inordinate amount of their own money on supplies to support their efforts in the classroom. They do this, taking money away from their own families, because their dedication to their 'kids' is that strong. 4) Among the teachers that we know, their dedication to their kids is so strong that they take crap from yahoo redneck parents, they take crap from Napoleonic administrators, and they take crap from people who think they've got it easy and they stick with it - for 20-30k a year - because their dedication to their kids will not let them quit.

Those are the teachers that I know. I can count 10 as I sit hear. I'm sure the wife could easily double that - her memory is a lot better than mine.

The issue of unions is an issue of the balance of interests between the workers, the employers, and the government. Corruption exists in all three factions. Prosecute corruption wherever it exists, but it is an empty argument for the abolition of unions. The labor laws are in place because unions out-lobbied big business in Washington. Remove the unions and government goes right back into the pockets of the employer. There was no 'Golden Age' of the laborer back before unions. There are no 'good ole days' to bring back. There are only the days when a laborer was worth no more than the materials he worked with, or actually considerably less in the eyes of his employer.

SPOBI...The H2 comes with the 6.0 not the I6...however you are correct on the H3, comes only with the 3.5 I5

More or less. It is a split between JCI and Toyoda Boshoku (sp?). The books is run by JCI and the management is all Japanese style. very different from traditional american management styles. Some pros and cons.
I took a step up professionally and also got out of the automotive industry (which I sorta miss) and am now a plant manager for a plastics extrusion company. So I guess that I am now one of the guys that the majority of the people in this thread hate.
