Truck forums stink....

Here's my story, i have owned 3 xj's in the past 4 years, now i have a 94xj w/ a 3" lift and 31" trxus Mt's. I love it, i came close to selling it for a truck to start my own landscaping business, but decided to keep it, and buy the truck anyways to pull the trailer. Here's the thing, the people i've been talking to on the F150 forums just dont seem knowledgable like you guys....they seem to only care about looks and wheels as opposed to tires and traction. So anyways, i'm looking to fit my 01f150 w/ a set of 33" Pro comp Mts...but i'm trying to figure out if the trucks extra weight will make it better in the snow and mud, or more prone to getting stuck and or slipping. So any of you guys w/ pickup truck to XJ knowledge chime in and let me know what you think will do better in 1. Deep snow and 2. mud and water. Thanks for any input.

Lifing ALL IFS vehicles blows ass. Leave it stock or sell it and get a 250 with a solid front axle. You don't even have to lift a 4x4 F-250 to put 33s on it.
 
Having owned the Pro-comp Mt's, never will again. I say spend your money somewhere else, a set of BFG AT's or the like for the truck. the back of the truck is alittle light when it comes to the snow and slick, in the past during winter have thrown a of 50lb sand bags near the wheel wells on each side to help out a bit.
 
no the 250s did not all come with straight axle, some have the IFS as well. The 350 does have the straight axle. But ya a 250 with the straight axle will fit 33s nicely and will be good in the snow and such.
 
One of my buddies actually has a 150 w/ 33's on it stock, i wasnt planning on lifting it. They rub only slightly at full lock. So aside from IFS being garbage, will it do as good as my XJ in deep snow or mud?

I used to be a member of F-150.com, you are right, its a terrible forum. Mostly just mall crawlers!


I no longer go there because my 01' F-150 lost the tranny at 14,000, and it was still all stock and I was the original owner! I sold that POS. $3500 for a new tranny then got rid of it, no more Fords for me. It seems that ford had a problem with thier auto's that year, according to my local tranny shop, they rebuild several a week. There is a TSB out from Ford so they know about the problem, but they wouldn't warranty it for me because it was out on time(4 yrs old). So I took the money I made off of it and bought a couple XJ's and fixed them up.

Doesn't help you much with the tires, I never got that far with mine!

Good Luck! And I hope yours is a stick. Get ready for the coil-over-plugs(COP) to start popping out soon if its a 5.4. I've heard several owners complain about that also.
 
yeahh, that ford tranny is something you hear about everyday, it seems like one day they do defective trannies on a passanger vehicle, next day they decide to do it to a truck etc...

Their transmissions is one reason why i WILL NEVER own a ford.

why did you hate the pro comp mts?

As for you guys hating fords, i was in the same boat when i was forced to look into pickups, but i heard much much more bad about chevy trucks crumbling into themselves a lot faster than ford.
 
I agree, the Ford is still the best truck made, but if thats all they got, no new ones for me!

I'll go back a few years and get a used mid 90's or something older. Thats when Ford was king.

Now they are too much like everyone else IMO!

I guess I got spoiled when I bought my 96' XJ 10 years ago. Its given me little problems and is really "built tough". If Jeep could do it then, why can't everyone else? Ive found that my Jeep does everything my F-150 used to do and honestly it does most things better.

I'd think that the stock tires on a 4x4 F-250 are 33"ish. My 4x2 F-250 has stock-size 235/85R16 tires (31.7"); the tires on a 4x4 must be bigger.

And I've got to go ahead and disagree with all the Ford haters. My 1989 F-250 is approaching 230,000 miles and runs like it's brand new. Since I've bought it a year and a half ago, the only things it's needed were a starter and power steering pump. The truck is mostly rust free, and runs way better than it has any right to.

Stock tires are about 30" to 31"ish.
I put brand new tires and wheels from an '06 4wd F-250 on my 2wd F-250.

Really? I don't know about the current generation of F-series trucks, but in the 87-91 models I'm pretty sure that the 4x4 F-250 had a 2" taller suspension and taller tires than the 2wd ones. Maybe mine's different somehow because it was a commercial truck; I don't know.

EVERYTHING Pro Comp makes blows ass!

Pro Comp is the 4X4 World's equivelent of Harbour Freight. It may work, but no where near well.

It is pimped out by 4 wheel parts distributors since they own it and can make high margins on it.

Get some real tires like MTRs, BFGs, Maxxis, etc.

Blew a tranny on my 5.4l Expi. I fixed it and then bought F-250 diesel. I didn't have much choice for heavy duty 4X4 trucks. Either I went to Chevy (fawking gay IFS and alloy heads) or Dodge (another Chrysler product and I already deal with that shit) or Ford (with a solid front axle).

I chose the Ford with the new Torqueshift tranny (supposedly better). My second choice would be the Dodge.

BTW Once you go deisel,you never want to go back ;)
 
97 F150, 153000 miles. 4.6 V8.

No complaints. I've spent some money, but no complaints.
