Transmission cooler mounting location

Does anyone out there have any experience mounting an automatic transmission cooler anywhere other than in front of the engine rad? I have stroked my inline 6 and have covered most of the bases. Custom aluminum rad, hood vents, hi flow water pump, spacer at the hood hinges etc etc. Engine temps are no longer a problem. The tranny runs too hot on long long up hills out on the trail where speeds are low and so is air movement. I also don't like taking all of that hot air from the tranny cooler and pushing it in to the engine compartment. I am even considering mounting a tranny cooler on the roof. I have to try something, there is no room under the hood. And I forgot to mention I have A/C. Any ideas?

I have pondered this very dilema. I have not settled on a spot yet but I have thought of, the roof (a whole lot of work and not practical for a daily driver), inside of the frame rail (not much air flow and subject to damage from debris or rocks), Cutting out a section of the fender and putting a screen to protect the radiator (won't look good and no room for a fan behind the cooler). I am sorta stuck about where to put the damn thing. I even thought about mounting it to the underside of the hood. I have seen this done and it didn't look bad.

Yes, or maybe mounting the cooler inside the top of the hood. Cutting a square hole in the hood and putting in a new bottom 2 or 3 inches down leaving the front edge level with the hood leading edge to allow air to get in easy. The cooler would be outside the engine compartment. This way the cooler won,t stick up much above the hood if at all so it won't block your forward view. Maybe also add insulation to the bottom inside of the new pan in the hood so engine heat is not transfered to the cooler. What do you think?

be kinda like a tranny cooler cowl hood ... i have mounted in the fender before on many cars but if u use the long tube like 1 maybe could mount it in the cowl area under the vents where some people reroute the intake to

I went through the same thing you are going through. I hated the idea of adding more heat to an already hot engine compartment. I finally decide to mount a transcooler behind the rear passenger tire. I have rigid bumper which required me to cut and fold the rear section which gave me a small area to mount the cooler. I used a Be Cool cooler with a "puller" fan on it. you would never even know the cooler was there except for the fact that the fan is pretty loud. This will turn out to be a good idea or a really, really bad idea. I guess I'll find out this summer. here is a link to my photo's ...http://picasaweb.google.com/jaypeesi/Jeep2#

Monster XBLA, very nice build up. I like the out of the box thinking of mounting behind the passenger rear wheel. I don't understand where the heat will be ejected to though. Do you have any more pictures showing how this will work? I would like to hear how this works for you this summer. I have a spare hood which I can cut up and use for testing purposes. As long as I don't run out of room between the engine and botom of the new pan I think I will try mounting a cooler above the engine as I described above. I may then add a cowl over this. I will take pictures and post it as I go along.
