I've got an 87 cherokee pioneer, 4.0 auto with 231 t case.
I'm swaping in a lower mileage 4.0 out of a 93 and looking a autos out of a 92 and a 95. I've been told that the inputs are all the same but they had different spline outputs? Both autos i'm looking at were behind 4.0's and had 231 t cases.

When I swapped in my 93 motor I kept my 89 tranny and it's still running strong. Sorry I cannot help you with spline counts, but I'd just keep the orig tranny if there isnt a problem with it if I were you.

Sometime after '90 the AW4 trans output shaft went from a 21spline to a 23pline. The trans torque converter bolt pattern should be the same through 95+..

The deal is sometime at 90-91 with the introduction of the HO motors they switched to the 23 spline tranny and tcases. As far as engine mating they are the same , so if you have a 91+ HO engine you can technically swap in a 90 or below tranny/tcase combo. Or visa versa if you have 90 you can swap in a 91+ tranny/tcase as long as you keep the tcase/tranny together.
