Trans fluid Q for my 96 XJ

I was told a while back never to use any transmission fluid other than the Dexron III Mercon suggested in the owner's manual, even after the IV, V, and VI versions came out, superseding the III version.

But this is what I'm seeing at the car part store now. Nothing lower than Dexron VI...

The one on the right says it's suitable for all Dexron III Mercon applications, but I'm assuming it may not hold up as long because it's regular fluid vs. the synthetic Dexron 6 on the left. Which one of these should I use in the old '96 XJ?

I've looked around but I can't find any Dexron III Mercon. Only product coming up is this. The fine print in the black says 'Recommended for Dexron-III, Mercon applications.' Is this as good as it gets for Mercon III now?

Look until you find true dex 3. Just because something says it covers previous editions doesn't mean it's actually good for it. Example: you put gl5 in a tranny that calls for gl4, you are gonna need syncros super soon. I've only heard bad things using updated fluids in a aw4.
