*12,000* miles, on a 95 CTD? I'd suspect it's over a million. Second flaw is the salesdroid thinks it's a Cumming engine. In any event, that's a 2nd Gen 12v. All mechanical injection, and rather significantly down on power compared to the 3rd Gens, but better than the 1st Gen CTDs. Still, you can get more power out of it with a few simple things like a fuel plate, governor springs and the like (so, I'm told.)

Heh.... I misread the ad. $12k for a 131k mile truck. Nothing for a 12v CTD, though.

I run a 12 valve turned up. I was blowing the doors off 24 valvers before I did any thing serious. My biggest expense in turning it up was the gauges. One must have guauges. Pitch the plate in the trash slide your arc forward dump that log of a muffler for some strait pipe and throw a boost elbow on it. Tune it to 35-37 psi and watch it sing.
Last Colorado fest that was my setup and haulin my jeep up the passes si was driving around common rails and dmax's pulling similar loads. I'm tellin u guys 12 is where it's at

Remember that dealers are there to make money. Me, I'd think that $12k for a 16 year old truck, even with low miles, is a little high. I shelled out $16k for a 6 year old truck with fewer miles in 2004. Without doing more price searching, I'd start at $8k or $9k.

I don't think you have to worry about the 53 block problem, but still look at the rear passenger side of the block for cracks. I'm pretty sure that you do have to be concerned about the Killer Dowel Pin. If you buy it, plan on getting into the front timing case to at least verify that the dowel pin problem has been addressed.

Truck ads

eflores, I'm not completely calling BS but a little. I doubt your 215hp-440ftlb off the show room floor 10+ year old truck can keep up with the 300+hp-600+ftlb trucks. With yours turned up you might just barely get into the range that they are pushing stock. Not to mention a $300-$600 electronic tune they will blow your truck away. The old mechanical trucks that make huge power aren't as streetable anymore. If you get a 01-02 7.3L or a 5.9L VP44 and newer truck it has more potential. They will get better fuel mileage and they are easier to drive.

To the OP: I did an Autotrader search in your area and 100miles around and found 45 trucks. I only did Dodge-Ford 98-02 because I think these trucks would be the best for you. 98.5-02 Dodge's came with a VP44 fuel pump and they get a good amount of flack for reliability but in truth it is the stock lift pump that goes out and they forces the VP44 to work too hard and it burns it out. If you get a VP44 truck and replace the stock lift pump with an AirDog or a FASS your truck should last a long time. I would also put 1 oz. of 2 stroke oil per gallon to help with fuel lubrication. These old trucks weren't designed to use the ultra-low sulfur fuel and the sulfur acts as a lubricant for the fuel pumps this makes their reliability go down also.

The last two years of the 7.3l all of the bugs were just about worked out and there are more of these motors out there than any other engine so there is something to be said for that. They also come with a true 4 door so those long trips would be easier. I don't know much first hand of these because I've never owned one but I've got a few buddies that swear by them.

I've got over 300k on my 2nd Gen 24v, and it's running strong.

I've got an 07' with 146,000 so I don't see mileage as an issue lol. Just go through it thoroughly and get a mechanic to take a look. Should be fine.

Sorry..I'm sure that was nice power in the hills, But IMO CRTT Is where its at.. :flipoff:

I had an 03 Dodge 4 door, long bed, 4wd, 5.9 cummins, auto, cloth, loved it, should never have gotten rid of it, tranny was shifting wierd at 100k, probably didn't need much to fix, traded it for an 07 dodge 4 door, short box, 2wd, 6.7 cummins, had a factory exhaust brake (was pretty awesome), 6 speed auto, moved to Montana, 2wd wouldn't cut it plus the tranny/engine were acting up (first year for both) 28000 miles traded it for an 05 F350 Crew Cab, short bed 4wd w/6.0. So much more room in the Ford, runs good, doesn't get near the mileage my 03 did, 22 mpg hiway - 14 towing 12k 5th wheel, to 17 mpg hiway - 11 towing same trailer. The 6.7 didn't get the same mileage as the 03 but it wasn't even broke in yet. If the Dodge had a full crew cab I'd still be driving one. My cloth seats in the 03 were still perfect after 100k miles, the drivers seat in the Ford w/only 80k sucks, broke down. Good luck! Coach

Trans in the dodge was probably the solenoids in the 1-2 shift. I had them replaced in my 06 mega ($200 repair)...what a difference it made, but my cloth seats sucked in that truck.

Good to see that the 6.0 is working well for you. Need more people with good stories on them. You can find great deals on them around here.

My 06 5.9 cummins only got 10.5 mpg with a 10k bumper pull 30ft enclosed, so 11 isn't bad in my book...my 08 f450 with the same trailer gets 7mpg :(

For the OP, I just saw an 02 extended cab dodge in the local free ad with diesel and 130k for $13,5k.

i have been looking. i about got a f350 but i dont have any credit, and my co-signers dont have good credit. it was a 2000 7.3 only 65,000 original miles. was 23k tho.
waiting to see what i get back in taxes to get an older one with cash

Yeah when I first bought I wanted an older 7.3 truck...unfortunately at the time my credit was marginal and the interest rates that they wanted for something 7+ years old was unreal...thats why I bought my 06 mega first cause at a year old I could get a really good interest rate. my credit is lots better now, i still had trouble getting a loan on a f450because they couldn't understand why i needed a commerical truck...

mac '21k is a lot for that 7.3...but comparable to what they are going for here with low miles' gyvr
