To Fram or Not to Fram

Oh holy crap, I read this thread a couple of days ago and thought I would try it. I have a 88 xj/wag with 150k and thought maybe the pump was just old. Got around 30 psi avg. during normal driving. Changed oil last night and used a pure one filter, much heavier btw, now it is running around 50. I was amazed. Thanks

check out: bobistheoilguy.com. lots of comment and technical data on oil, filters, grease, etc. etc. they definitely dislike fram.......

Looks like I'm gonna have to make a trip to autozone tomorrow. Is there a general consencus(spelling?) on Mobil 1 for being cheap $ but good quality.

Mobil-1 ain't cheap, if you are a member of sams club, BJ's wholesale or cosco get it there, it will be more than a $1 a quart cheaper...

Installed a pure one oil filter about two weeks ago, increased my oil pressure so much that now I have too much blow by in my air filter.

Try resetting the engine computer. Disconnect power, etc. You may find more improvement if the ECU can relearn parameters for the new sensors.

XJXJ, you mentioned this on another thread and I've been meaning to ask you about it. I thought I'd read somewhere that 3 cycles of killing the engine/restarting would reset computers just as disconnecting the battery does. I've had the new O2 sensor in for 5 months or so. Might it still help to disconnect power? How long do you have to leave it disconnected?

I always used Fram until recently, I switched to K&N. Noticed an immediate increase in oil pressure. I figured it was worth the extra bucks to extend the life of my motor anyway possible.

Also with the Frams, I always had to check for the rubber O-ring as it would stick to the motor everytime. The first time this happened, it was on my brother's '96 Mustang GT and it was a gut wrenching site to watch 4 qts. of Mobil 1 end up on the floor of my garage.

Not a function of oil pressure, but rather compression blow by of rings/pistons.

Oil pressure does not indicate a particular filter's ability to filter, only it's ability to flow. A higher pressure (new) may indicate a restrictive filter.

On the oil filters I will have to plug the Baldwin filters again, these are not well known, but super nice filters. Check them out at www.baldwinfilters.com/products/lube.html
the full flow version for the 4.0 is # B-2, they have a distributor list on the website. I got mine at Fleet Pride for $4.75 ea.

I've been useing fram for 2 years now with quaker state 4x4 synthetic blend but recently swiched to a Mobil 1 filter and have noticed that my oil has stayed cleaner longer. So from now on I'll be using mobil 1

I haven't used the Fram filters since I read that writeup years ago. I've been using purolator Pure 1 filters in basically everything.

I have an 88MJ with a 4.0 and it uses a different oil filter than my 94YJ with 2.5. The 2.5 in the YJ uses the same filter as my 98 TJ with 4.0.

SO, which one of these will that 1 quart filter fit? I think it's the 94 YJ and the 98 TJ, but not the 88 MJ.

However, in comparing the oil filters for the YJ and the MJ side by side, I couldn't tell a difference. I assumed it to be a standard thread vs a metric thread difference. Is that the case?

Will the FL-1A fit the YJ? IS there one for the MJ?

And, bonus question... what year make model do I tell the guy at the parts store to get that filter? You know he'll have to type it into the computer to get it.

Thanks.

So nobody here uses the Stock Mopar oil filter? I think it is black and has the Mopar, Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep logos on it. I pick mine up at the dealer and they seem to work just fine. No leaks and good pressure. I have run them on all my Jeeps since day one. And it only costs three bucks, same as anywhere else.

I belive theres a few that do

I use all three, when I bought it I picked up a whole case of them, the mopars, then started using Mobil-1 filters because Kmart in NJ near where I worked had them for $10 or so and they would go on sale, a 2 for 1 so I'd take the whole family and we'd get 8 at one store and 8 at another. Then I tried K&N and they were OK but a couple loosened up after I put them on so I stopped, shot them an email and went back to mopar and Mobil-1. Then I went back to K&N. Tried a Purolator but it took too long to build up oil pressure in the morning. I had two frams blow their cans off and a couple that had the O ring stick on the mounting surface [my fault, shoulda checked]...
Generally I do the oil change with mobil-1 oil and M-204 filter then if I don't get to do an oil change as scheduled I pull the mobil filter, put the Mopar on and add a quart.

Lots of talk in this thread and others in the past on the increase in oil pressure being one of the main indicators of a good filter. If fact, it appears that many have changed to Mobil 1 and Purolator filters to resolve or help with low pressure problems.

After a close look at the 4.0's oiling system, it appears that oil flows from the pump, past the oil pressure sending unit to the filter and then on to the main oil galley which then feeds the crank, cam bearings, top end, etc. The important thing to note is that oil pressure is measured between the pump and filter. As mentioned in mudpuddle's response to the comment on blow-by: "Oil pressure does not indicate a particular filter's ability to filter, only it's ability to flow. A higher pressure (new) may indicate a restrictive filter."

A filter such as the Mobil 1 that is known for it superior ability to capture microscopic particles will show an increase in oil pressure at the guage, but the pressure drop across the filter of 6 - 8 psi, results in less pressure available at the cam and crank. Ditto for the Purolator and K&N; good filters, but they may be too good.

I've used Purolator in the past. On my '90 XJ with 250,000 miles, it was typically good for an indicated 10 psi improvement. Once I took a close look at the oiling system, I found that the extra pressure wasn't doing the engine any good. Looking at the web study on filters, I switched to a Wix filter. It does a good job of filtering without the restriction of some of the other high end filters. I think the Wix results in a 1 - 2 psi pressure drop. It also has a good anti-drain back valve and quality construction.

If I were running Mobil 1 or another brand of synthetic oil, I'd use the Mobil 1 filter. But on an older engine where oil pressure is an issue, I'm sticking with Wix. I don't want to leave half the horses in the corral.

Can you use the Motorcraft oil filter that was used on the 5.0? Are you talking about the one used on Mustangs or F150's? I have an 88 F150 with the 5.0, and I would LOVE to only buy one size of oil filter to have around when I am ready to change the oil in my vehicles.

If its a PH-8A and you have the 4.0 with the horizontal filter mount then it will work. Just be sure to add about an extra half quart.

O.K. I had to do it just too see what all the deal was about fram. I have used Fram for ever sence I started driving and working on my own vehicals. The oil in my jeep was done last week at wally world and they use frams, so I went to Orielly's and got a wix put it on and the pressure went up 10 p.s.i. and the valves did not rattle as much.

My pressure is fine and I have been using Fram's, but after reading this I think I'll try something else with next oil change. I do agree with the drainback, never have any oil come out of mine,BUT..my filter is not horizontal like other XJ's, mine sticks straight up in the air, so not sure if any filter will help the drainback.
