So, I just talked to Aaron (redneck) up in TN. He stayed up there after the M&G yesterday for some trail fun. Seems he lost his driver side front wheel...broke a stub shaft, then lost the unit bearing?? :scared:He's got a pic up on his facebook page if you have access. He said they just got in, and now have to take it apart and find out what they need. Anyone have a spare D30 up in the Murfreesboro area????:callme:
Oh yeah, he's got to be at work at 5pm tomorrow....in Enterprise, AL...I dunno, maybe 5 hrs south of where he is now.....:rattle:

Damn! Didn't he sell his spare UB's at the M&G?

We don't have any complete D30 axles but we might have some parts.

Mark has a 2000 XJ unit bearing. Our numbers are in the recovery thread.

Mark six 15-6oh4-nine 01 nine
Ed 61five-76five-56oh7

Have him call me if I can help. Got a shaft and unit bearing and maybe whatever else he needs. Did the hiem break on the steering? From the looks of it I'd say so...I don't have one of those.

Right now he's looking for D30 spider gears, or 4 pins for a lock Right...

Man that sucks. but how'd he break right there?

I hope he gets it back going.

I asked the same question. Apparently it was broke prior to it "coming apart" right there....he said sheered the chromo stub shaft....took out his front Locker too.

I think we have some D30 spider gears in the shop. Let me go see and I'll post back in a minute.

I have a set of D30 spider gears from where we installed an Aussie in High2by's rig. I have the 4 gears and the shims for the two small gears that ride on the cross shaft.

I don't have the side thrust washers or cross shaft though. LMK.

Where is the XJ now? In Murfreesboro, Woodbury, or Short Mountain?

if the stub shaft breaks between the nut and the flange on the backside of the unit bearing then there is nothing holding the unit bearing together. so the bearing will come apart and the wheel will fall off. all he should need to fix it is a new shaft and unit bearing. unless he was really unlucky and it messed up the rotor or the knuckle where the caliper mounts

yeah. i figured he woulda replaced it before he kept driving on it.

Update.

Aaron's jeep is at Kevin's (midtennjeeper) house. The front end is pulled apart. Garth was on his way back to the house with spider gears whenever I left. All they have to do is replace the locker with the spiders and put it all back together. He should be driving it tonight.

He broke his locker (pins) on a pretty gnarly trail. This caused his front end to be locked full time which in turn caused his short shaft to break and the bearing to fail. His steering wasn't damaged. It was just the bearing and the wheel along with a piece of axle shaft that came off.

I watched that thing break. It was insane.

Yea if you run a D30 you should carry a spare stub to hold the Unit bearing together. Ed if you or mark have a stub with busted u-joint ears it would be a good idea to add it to the list of things to take to the Crawl.

Better yet, I have 2 2wd stubs just for that purpose.

I need more details....can you shoot up some more info for someone who has yet to break a D30, or tear one down that far....Thanks!:dunno:

In order to keep proper pre-load on the uni-bearings you must have the stub shaft installed and torqued to 175ftlbs or the uni-bearing will fall apart. Carry at least one, better yet 2 stub shafts/unibearings. Another killer for the D-30 is the axle u-joints and stock shafts, if a axle u-joint lets go it will take out the stub shaft ears and can take out the ball joints and also bend the inner "C". That is why most who wheel hard on a 30 will run chromo shafts and stronger joints or go with Longfields like I have.

Of course strengthening the shafts puts the load on the carrier/R&P so if that breaks you will need 2 stub shafts and axle tube plugs to get back home(just remove front DS, both axle shafts, install stub shafts and plug the tubes and drive home in 2wd)
