I love the tire carriers but don't want to shell out $600.00 + for them. Im ok (at best) at welding and wanted to see anybody that has pics that has made theirs and how did they do it. Thanks guys
Heres mine, made from 2x4 3/16, all stick welded, got the latch and hinge off some site. Been holding up good for last 3 years. Got something like 125 bucks in it.
basically made an ordinary 2x4 rear bumper tied in using nut strips.
welded a bolt on one end and made a bracket that welded to my 1/4 guards to mount 2 7/8" heims. at the other end is just a 7/16" bolt that threads into a nut welded to a piece of angle for the latch.
it much more solid than the ordinary hinge styles. puts much less stress on the factory bumper mounts (that are known to fail) and tie ins, makes zero noise and doesn't move one bit. glad i did it this way.
couple build pics i suppose
and heres a crappy cell phone pic of how it opens, you get the idea
I fabricated all the fender flares with 3/4 gas pipe from Lowes bent with a HF pipe bender and 16ga sheet metal. All four are built to be fully removable.
I built the bumper at the same time as the carrier. The bumper was built with a 4x4x1/4" steel which was tied into the unibody with two 3x2x1/4" chunks steel and bolted with welded in nutserts. Just about everything you see there was fabricated in my garage out of raw material with the exception of the hardware you see.
The tire carrier is fabricated with all 1/4" steel and a Comp4x4 1750lb spindle. The tire mount is fully adjustible for different tire sizes and or wheel offsets.
