just an idea but i would like to put coil overs on the front of my XJ just to clean up the axle a bit and have a cleaner look. simpler mount on the tube instead of the giant coil bucket and extra things.

yes i know this is not a 2hr weekend project but i am just looking for an idea of shock size. is a King 2.5x14 too big? if that's not a good size then what length do i want?

i know the longer the shock the better but i'm not planning to jump this thing, just like the look better and want a real nice compfy ride.

But I believe 14 would be good, you do have longarms, correct? Also depends on where you want to mount them exactly on the axle and such.
Best thing to do is remove coil springs and measure compressed/ext length of your axle travel.
I have the stock style coils/shocks but I will be running 12" shocks when I get some funds for that. I will use limit straps of course.

Not that much money. Used set of shocks for $700 and a other $100 in metal. Not too worried about it.

Still unsure of front axle. My blown up Jetta trans is distracting me right now.

that's what i was getting from a few people, a 12in travel is the best, 10 little short wile 14 is just a little long unless you are jumping and need a lot more travel. i'll be keeping my eyes open for a set of used 12s.

If you can use the extra 2" of down travel then I wouldn't pass up a good deal if that is what you end up with. Not too familiar with coilover/strut setup but you would think with the taller height mount point you would want that extra?

You can get a shorter 14" to fit without cutting the hood but it is far easier to do 12" shocks. Don't run anything less that 2.5" coilovers.....2" can't control the heavy front end of the XJ so well. Air shocks don't take the road vibes too well and when they blow you are screwed. Don't run emulsion shocks either and what ever shocks you choose, plan to TUNE THEM! Spend time tuning and it pays off HUGE in the long run.

Do yourself the favor and tune them....tuning can make the difference between an OK rig and an AWESOME rig.

ok after working on a lot of other things i am back at this again, thinking about coil overs.

2.0s are too small?

14in is too long without cutting the hood or lifting like 8 inches correct?

I'm running 12" x 2.0" Fox coilovers with reservoirs in the front on my rig. Yes I would have had to lift it way too high to fit 14's because I had interference with the master cylinder. The way around that is move the axle forward to where there is no interference and then you can go through the hood if needed.

I would go with 2.5" coilovers if you plan on jumping it or racing, but the cost is much much more. Otherwise, the 2.0's will work fine.

get 12" 2.5s....2.5s when tuned can control the front end of the heavy XJ/MJs WAY better than the 2.0s.
