The Tear Down Begins

Started tearing down the battered hulk of the old XJ recently, I will have some items to sell in a few weeks once it's stripped of usable parts. So far I've removed: Door and hatch speakers, (aftermarket Pioneers, went straight into my son's '92) Kevin's Jeep Parts rock sliders (probably list these) Trail Ready rear bumper w/tire carrier, M.O.R.E. steering box brace, gas tank factory skid, custom t-case skid, all bulbs that worked last I tried them, front clip & harness, (trashed) rear hatch & taillight assys, (trashed)

With a little luck I'll get the winch and front TR bumper off tomorrow, maybe pull the t-case and drivelines as well. Rear bumper looks like it's okay, front bumper got pushed over a couple of inches and will need to be straightened out (stretched back to original width, basically) before I can tell if it's usable.

Felt good to make some progress on it finally, I can tell I'm going to be a little sore tomorrow, but the ribs held up to the abuse alright. Starting to get a vibe for working on the new XJ, but still have a ways to go on the wrecked '91.

Sounds good, Doug. It is great to hear that you are getting a move on your new jeep, I can't wait to see it in action this spring/ summer. Are you planning on making it to noobfest? It would be great if you could come out and share some insight and ride along with us.

The ticker starts. I did my swap/build in two weeks, and my new build was even broken....

To be fair, I wasn't broken tho.

Edit, You can sawzall through the whole thing in under 20 minutes to dispose of the shell. I cut a few up into 4 managable pieces. the dash area/firewall is the heaviest.

Good luck!

Good to hear your getting started. Any pictures of the new rig?

Like a hot knife through butter.

I hadn't considered cutting it up into pieces to dispose of it, a buddy of mine does some vehicle salvage/disposal work and I was planning on giving him a ring to haul the carcass off complete when I was done stripping it. I like the idea of taking it off in pieces though, I'll check back for some more info on where to cut when the time comes.

I got the front bumper straightened out yesterday. Pulled my buddy's pickup into the garage to use as an anchor, parked the CJ at the end of the driveway, rolled the XJ out sideways across the driveway and anchored one end of the bumper and winched on the other. I was surprised how well it straightened out, really looks pretty damn good all things considered.

I'm a lazy asshole Luddite technophobe, so no pics. Sorry. I also got the winch off yesterday. Next up is to get the front bumper removed, likely tonight. Then the drivelines, t-case, trans, and engine. Already have a buyer for the 4.0L, plan on re-using the 242 in the '98. I'm planning on selling the AW4, worked fine when I pulled the battered rig off of the trailer a couple months ago. Should be ready to sell a few things in about a week or two. I'll post up, or you can PM me if you want to call dibs on anything.

Let me know what you do to get rid of the old rig...I still need to trash mine, maybe we can get a trailer and take both to the scrap yard, split the cost for a trailer and take the profit for our old rigs.

It's a couple of buddies, actually. They both hold salvage licenses, but only do it part-time. The more I think about it, the more I'm leaning towards cutting it up. It could potentially be thrown in pieces into the bed of a pickup and hauled off to the metal recycliong section of the dump. I believe there are laws regarding how small the pieces have to be to dispose of it as a non-vehicle.

I hear you have to do it at seperate occassions when cut up...otherwise you must have the vin on the car and title in hand.

um no and no. I've scrapped 5 Cherokees to date. I cut them up, and take them to random places. I think if you were to scrap the shell you'd get a whopping 4 dollars. I think it's something ridiculous like $10/ton for iron these days. I don't want the money or the hassle. Just take it to a place that is not a metal recycling company. The dump recycles metal but won't pay you for it. That's perfect.

The cuts can be anywhere, it's that easy. Just watch out for the residual fuel in the lines. :)

I dont know where you got your #'s but I just scrapped a xj with no axles or trans and tc. the engine was still there. I got $130 for it at a scrapper in everett. This yard said right now its $88 a ton

The rules for having it in small enough pieces only apply to vehicles you are disposing of WITHOUT having posession of the title. I'm assuming Doug has this, so he could have his hulk hauling buddies dispose of it, or dispose of it himself whole.

And Doug, I may need your AW4 if you don't have a buyer yet, lemme know what you want for it.

I do have the title, so I have options. Sawzalling it into pieces is extra work, which I'd prefer tp avoid if at all possible. I'll get ahold of my buddy Rick in a couple of weeks when I'm closer to having it completely stripped down, leave the suspension/axles for last in case I need to roll it onto his trailer and then pull them there. Either way I expect to have it out of my garage within a month or so.

last night I wrestled that jungle-gym of a front bumper off, pulled the rest of the front clip remnants, along with the radiator and A/C condensor unit. It's now clear enough to make getting the engine out of there easier. So far the engine, transmission, and rock sliders are all spoken for. I'll list up whatever else is intact and may have value to someone else as the weeks go on here.

Pulled the gas tank out last night, wire-wheeling the long mounting studs at the forward end makes this much easier. Almost impossible to get the filler and vent hose off of the tank end with it in the Jeep, just lowered it at an angle and pulled them through the gap. Salvaged about five gallons of gas out of it. Also pulled the front and rear drivelines out. Today or tomorrow I'll pull the t-case, which I'm keeping. Gas tank is available. Stock tank, undented and doesn't leak, PM if interested.

without a title the rig has to be at least cut in half. the last one i scrapped i couldn't find the title so i used a kobleco log loader an wadded it up into a ball. schnitzers didn't bat an eye. just make sure you punch holes in the feul tank and smash it good or they generally wont take it. However I know that they added a crap load of laws and I know that some of those laws was to crack down on crack heads who steal, steel and sell it so it might be different now.

Will you be around today Doug? I wouldn't mind stopping by, and maybe lending a hand. (assuming I can remember how to get there)

~Scott

Yeah, I should be home today. I don't need a hand at this point, but you can come pull that seat if you want to.

Thanks, that's good info. I have a buddy lined up with a trailer to help me haul the shell off after I'm done stripping it. It will have no running gear, suspension, gas tank, or bumpers. I'll bring the title, maybe get that $100-ish for it.
