The tale of the $500 XJ

Just a quick shot of balancing the Pistons.

Jon: Thank you! I'm aiming for around 215-230 horse and 320-330ft/lb torque.

As far as balancing the rods goes, you remove material from the balancing pads (extras big chunks of martial on the top (wrist pin side) and the rod cap). The rod cap does your rotating end and the top pad does your reciprocating end.

do you check run out on a lathe and then take away material to balance them? sorry for the new questions dude. this is cool to see man.

just put ends on a scale and then remove material until its even? Is it a requirement to balance them, or more like a bonus, it'll run better sort of thing? once again, i dont know crap about building a motor. this is neat to see.

this is cool man. I dig it. I am looking forward to seeing this sexy beast on the trail man.

320 ft lb of torque gets me all excited .

Jon: copied this from my Facebook post

So to balance Pistons, you could chuck it into a 4-jaw on the lathe, check run out, and then remove material slowly. But that would take too long. Using a 3-jaw, as I am, you simple chuck the piston in and make your cut. It doesn't need to be super precise, just don't remove too much material and make it over light.

You're pretty much spot on with the rods. The scale needs to be in 10th's of grams if you really want to get precise. Most places will get you with in a gram or two.

I can't wait to get it on the trail. Going to stock plenty of extra axle shafts and such.

Gordo: you hit the nail right on the head.

Thank you all!

Here's a quick update on the build. Got the engine out, disassembled, cleaned, and measured the bearing tolerances on the mains and the rods.

Doing the head work this weekend. Polishing the combustion chambers and the runners. Keeping the ports small to keep intake velocity high since this isn't a high revving engine.

So rad seal. I love this thing man.

It could be.. #becauseracejeep .
Think 4643. Just do not think "What would Cal do".

Thank you all!

Awesome! Thank you Casey!

Was looking at the jeep today and it looks like the marine air is starting to take a toll on the body. Might be having a sanding and priming party to clean it up. I'll supply pizza and beers for all those who are willing to come lend a hand.

As long as the marine it hasn't done anything to the engine while it's been apart. I was afraid that's what I was about to read. Haha

Haha peel the potato! That's a good one!

Thanks for offering up to help, I'll let you all know a date and time soon. I want to drop the engine back in first so I'm not touching fresh paint with dirty hands. Should be two weeks from the weekend. I really appreciate any help I can get.

Making headway on the engine build.

Surfaced the block, bored and honed the cylinders, did a light polish on the intake and exhaust runners and adapted a 94 ho fuel rail to fit the renix intake.

Randomness happened on Easter weekend while helping Casey with his jeeps. This guy drove by towing a waggy that he had just picked up, saw us and came back around seeing if we wanted to buy it. Thing was really cool. Even had a period correct car phone... When it was actually legal to talk on the phone and drive.

You can still make emergency calls on that phone!
