The tale of the $500 XJ

Bout time you caught up your thread.. Think it's almost time to update mine. Haha waiting on that last special piece to arrive before I make a large update on what is to come of the Gray Goose.

Awesome pics and work. Looks like you all had a great time. Wrenching is a good thing. It'll help keep you busy after a breakup, helped me immensely last year.

Thank you! It was a blast, and an eye opener. I pushed the potato a little past it's limits by doing the con on 31's and open diffs.

Thanks, that's what I've been trying to do. Just wheel an wrench while trying to remain positive about it all.

Thanks Pat. How are you liking the new front end set up?

Haha yeah I think it shows just how far you can take a pretty basic set up, but it would have been nicer with a locker. That being said I've been doing son research and I'm kind of leaning toward running OX lockers front and rear with the electric solenoid. Has anyone had personal experience with them?

Thanks John, it was a blast. It lived up to its reputation. The pictures are kind of old. We went through in July. It rained on us a bit but otherwise it was hot and dusty.

are you staying on 31s or 33s?
You could temporarily throw in a lunchbox up front or in the rear while you save up for selectables since they are easy to install and you can resell a lunchbox for 120$ easily to get some money back when you do go to selectables.

have you looked into yukon air lockers?

I'm going to 35's after the 31's.

Thanks Jon, That's a really good idea actually. It seems like they hold up well to some really gnarly abuse. I may just do this to start.

I've read a little about them, but not too much. Has anyone here used them?

I run a lunchbox up front. Its in its fourth carrier. Still works great. Shark mark runs at least one ox. Dont have any personal experience with them but if i had my choice i would choose them. However the only selectable for the 14bolt is arb.

Definetly brakes with 35s. That's on my list to do now. With 33s I ran ebc's greenstuff pads on centric premium rotors/calipers and was able to lock them up. With 35s and cheaper brakes its noticeable the time it takes to stop.

Thanks for the input guys!

Haha so gordo, you're saying the locker holds up better than the carrier? I've seen you out that locker through it's paces and I'm impressed.

Definitely ditching the vac-disco axle, already have a hp30 waiting for me in sac at Casey's place. Already has some reinforcements done to the uppers, and new ball joints. As far as brakes I'm contemplating the wj swap, or seeing if there is a Bette rotor/pad combo I can run. Even on 31'snit feels like my brakes are lacking a little. As far sat steering goes I was going to swing my ruff stuff next time I'm in sac and pick up their hiem steering kit possibly, maybe the one-ton tre kit. So many decisions!!

Also looking at getting 10" prothane bumps in the front, and progressive bumps for the rear.

Mainly saying that you can buy time on a front lunchbox. If you have the funds id do a full case. But i personaly selectable rear but auto front. You can save a bundle going that route and spend that extra 400 on something else.

Wj swap requires some work on the steering components and trackbar if I remember correctly. I'd wait to do the steering til you do the swap to save some money. There is also black magic brakes from Blaine. Heard great things about them.

Llama: Black magic brakes? I've never heard of them. What have you heard about them?

Gordo: Is that the route that you're going with as well? Or are you going to stay spooled in the rear with a selectable front?

Hey Seal.
I have some prothane 19-1705 COIL inserts 10.5 inch long.
I got them for my gear and gusset project but not going to use them.
I could bring to hollister you can have for a fair price

Ill be going auto in the front. Although i think detroit is the only company making a auto locker for the dana 70. And arb selectable for the 14bolt.

I did the spool for budget reasons. Its doable but deffinately not ideal.

That would be awesome john. What price were you thinking? Just pm me with the number.

Ahhh I didn't realize the limited options for lockers in the one ton flavors. Yeah I saw how the spool pushed at slickrock.

Thank you btw john for offering that, you rock.

Seal, for Thanksgiving I need to meet up with you in Bakersfield so I can give you the smaller parts I have (I'm sure my mom would enjoy seeing you). We will still have to plan a work party weekend for you to come up to Sac and rebuild our d30s but I can give you some misc. trim pieces you need. If you do eventually do a brake upgrade, I want your stock parts. lol
