mainly because 60 rears go for cheap all day long. most people consider them to big and heavy to be worth the hassle.

Actually not 100% true....

60 rears are a full float 30 spline axle. Same splines as a dana 44. They are bigger but not that much heavier than a Dana 44 when converted to semi float (maybe 50# more w/35 spline shafts narrowed). In its stock form, a dana 60 axle will not really be any stronger than a dana 44 for a jeeper's needs (and as mike said it is wide).

I get Dana 60s and gut them, cut off all the brackets and the ends and weld on semi-float ends to various narrow widths. When shaved, the clearance on a D60 is the same as a Dana 44. Once you build an axle like this, it'll cost you only a couple dollars more than a Dana 44 (with alloys, gears, disc brake conversion, and locker) yet you will (most likely) never break it.
