Adam, what you want to do is ground the ground side switched coil pin. I can't tell what K5-11 and K5-4 are. Measure the voltage on each pin when the fan is turned on by the ECU, then wire your ground to whichever one is grounded. Warning, depending on how sophisticated the ECU is it may throw a DTC relating to a circuit fault on the relay control circuit if you do this, in which case you need to add two diodes in a wired-AND configuration so each control circuit only sees what it is doing. Any 1N4001 through 1N4007 diode should be fine and they are cheap.

I'm guessing since grounding pin 85 blows the fuse, that is the hot side, in which case you should ground 86, but double check that.

Oh, and there will be 12V on both 85 and 86 when the relay isn't energized, because Ohms Law. The second the relay is energized one or the other will drop to near zero.

Rovers are not positive ground. The switch is supposed to interrupt the ground wire (BN = Black Brown) on 87 of relay K109. So the black/brown wire gets hooked up to the dash switch + and exits on the - switch post. It's same principle as a light switch but your using the relay ground wire. Your interrupting the relay to ground connection, when you do that the positive from the battery is cut off from seeking ground (your dash switch).

The whole point of a relay as I'm sure you're aware is to switch a large current with a small current, so he's defeating the whole purpose by running that large current on pin 87 through a switch in the cab. I don't know why.

If you wanted to force the fan off, you could put a switch inline with 85 or 86. Open the switch, fan stops.

If you want to force it on, put a switch from 86 of K109 to ground.

If you want to be able to do either, cut the wire from Z118 to pin 86 of K109. Buy an on/off/on non-momentary SPDT switch. COM pin goes to pin 86, one side pin goes to the wire from Z118, the other side pin goes to ground. Switch centered will force the fan off, switch to one side will give factory behavior, switch to the other side will force it on.

A switch with an LED in it for this task is going to be interesting to wire. Assuming the LED draws less than the pull-in current of the relay coil, you could set it up so that it lights up when the fan is OFF easily enough, but you'd have to get a switch with the LED pins both separate from the switch wiring to make it come on when the switch+fan are on.
