THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Yeah I'm not building a house or anything, nor any major remodeling anytime soon. Not to mention I don't have $400 to drop on a saw setup right now.

I was just gonna get something like this. Just something for building a workbench, some shelves, simple shit.

You'll save yourself SO much trouble if you get one that has a fence. Doing everything by hand sucks. Also, that saw won't be able to cut a 4x4 in one pass.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I really just plan on using it for going through plywood and sheets of stuff.

I was just gonna use my chopsaw I already have for 4x4s and shit. I bought a cheap wood blade for it.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Got my inspection on my truck yesterday.

Then proceeded to drag my unregistered trailer up to the house .

Hopefully get that straightened out on Friday, then get the MJ up here sometime after that.

Gotta get a circ saw, some wood, and make some shelves/workbench in the basement/garage first.
If you were driving the trailer up anyway, why not just bring the MJ too?

that's the exact saw I have. Works well no complaints.

Lots of practice by hand for straight cuts or get a straightedge and some clamps and you can rip almost anything. My straightedge is nothing fancy, some c-clamps and an old exterior door jam that I squared up on the jointer. Works well and doesn't warp or more.

Your metal saw?
We'll at least you are not using a wood saw for metal.

Well...in case I DID get pulled over with an unregistered trailer, if the guy wasn't a dick I could just say "see I don't even have anything loaded, just dragging it to my house so I can get it registered". Plus less of a chance of shit happening with an unloaded trailer.

Made sense in my head at the time

Cool beans, good to know thanks.

Is there anything wrong with doing that if I throw a wood blade on it...? Seems like it would work fine to me.

The RPM rating of the wood blade exceeds the rating of the saw so...?

Yeah, I guess that makes sense.

Not really. A metal saw will turn slower and isn't as "true" as far as chatter goes so my uneducated guess is the cuts would not be as clean. I wouldn't want to do molding that way or any interior finish work, but cutting some 2x4s would probably be fine.

Not sure I see the issue, just cover up the rough edges with bondo

smart.

I have lots to do at work today...also hoping I can convince myself to go to the gym after...we'll see.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Yeah....cut speed isn't right and the fixturing on the saw isn't as good so it'll be tough to do anything but coarse work with it.

Also you're limited by having only one rotating axis for adjusting angle vs. a compound miter saw (if you have to do a 45* cut across the end of a 2x4 or 2x6 you'll have to stand the piece up vertically in the chop saw vise).

I'm looking at this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Evolution-Power-Tools-RAGE3-Multipurpose/dp/B0030M2TCC

It's a compound miter saw that's built for cutting both wood and metal; it's a 'cold' cut as opposed to an abrasive wheel and the same blade can be used for pretty much any material. And it's really nice to not have to jockey around with your workpiece in order to get the right angle.

I ain't got shit today, trying g to milk it. Could of had everything done at 8

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Got an older craftsman radial arm saw that would probably cut anything you'll ever need
8" or 10"? I used my father's 8" / 8-1/4" when we were doing the house. Made is super nice to have one saw at 90 degrees and the other for all the other angles. Made things go much faster.
How much do you guys want for it? Just shoot me a text or something.
The only issue with a radial arm saw if you have to be prepared for it to jump at you. Usually not an issue in anything other than really wet, damp, bowed lumber or a nail. I love my father's and if I could find another like it I would buy it in a heartbeat. The issue is that stupid recall on them a few years ago so anyone looking to sell them can get $100 just for turning them in.
If Ross can get you one, I wouldn't hesitate if I was you.

That's going to be a theme for at least 6 months

I have 2 of these in the front room. For the price/load capacity, it was easier to buy than make.

I would recommend pallet shelves instead if you're planning on stockpiling tf727s, 440s, and 8.75 rears like your dad, Colin :laugh2:

You can get them surplus/cheap in a few places according to my buddy Jeremy's dad. Hell, he scrapped a pile of them a while ago, I was going to grab them but didn't have time.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I got spoiled using my dad's 12" dual-bevel sliding compound miter saw:

http://www.craftsman.com/craftsman-...p-00918629000P?prdNo=9&blockNo=9&blockType=G9

You can change any angle on it in about 2 seconds, it locks in accurately at all the common miters, the laser lines up perfect, etc. When a big part of your business is everything from framing to finish work a saw like that earns its place pretty quickly.

Technically I can borrow it whenever but it's on an enormous rolling stand and weighs well over 100 lbs fully assembled, so I'd probably rather just get the Rage one I posted before. Plus the ability to do metal with it is tits.

That's the one I have and it was worth every penny. I debated between the 10" and the 12" but the 12" was just so big it didn't make sense for the smaller stuff. I can cut a 4x10" in a single pass so I figured "How often am I cutting larger than that?"
