Oh I forgot. I also got two goats for xmass. But their in Ethiopia.
So I'm thinkin about getting a lathe, that's nothing new.
But if I had a lathe, then I'd be tempted to do stuff for work, that I currently have to send out to a 3rd party machine shop. And if I were gonna do that, I'd want to get paid for it, because although I like my company, I'm not a charity and the work is gonna get paid for one way or another. It'd just wind up being easier for me (and better quality control because I know how our parts need to be made).
So in order to do that, I'd probably have to set myself up as some sort of business. Which extending that line of thought further, isn't all that bad an idea. My property is zoned commercial so I'd be able to legally operate out of my garage. Equipment purchased for the business (such as a lathe) could be used in a beneficial way against taxes.
I'd also have a means to do things for my customers at work that right now I can't legally or physically do out of our office. Such as, if a customer wants a complete package including adapter plates, or controls, or wiring, that sort of thing, ordinarily that sub-business gets routed through a 3rd party 'integrator' to whom we sell our portion of the completed assembly. It's all shit that I know how to do so in theory I could sell the motor to my personal company and package the rest on my own time.
Just thinkin out loud...it'd be nice because it would only need to big a business as I wanted it to be. We don't require a whole lot of 3rd party machine shop stuff (although when we do, it's usually a rush-type job), and the integrating stuff could be work that I'd only take on if it were something I was comfortable with and felt that I had the time to do it effectively.
It'd be interesting to see if that'd raise any conflict-of-interest stuff. I think as long as all the costs were documented (both on my end and my normal employer's) and it could be proven that I wasn't giving myself special pricing or gouging on machine work, it'd be OK.
