Yep... gotta cover the pinion with something too if you do it in the housing. I'd probably give it a try, few layers of duct tape over the carrier bearings to keep spatter out, then shoot antispatter spray everywhere else (I forgot they made that) and go to town.
Wouldn't be surprised if it wrecked it though.
Oh, make sure the ground clamp is directly on the carrier, not on the axle tube, unless you want arc pitting all over your carrier bearings. That would make it easy to tell how fast you're going with your eyes closed but I think it'd get old after a while.
