THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: The NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

(Apologies for the wall of text :laugh3:)

x2. The front speakers in my VW cost me only $160.

And Scott, don't do it in stages. Just do it once and do it right and you'll save $ in the long run. I had every detail of my system planned before I purchased a single piece. What are you getting for amps? The equipment will only sound as good as the installation meaning that speaker placement is key. So how crazy do you want to go?

If only I could have been as diligent with my project planning on my XJ as my soundsystem.
I will probably be installing the speakers in (or near) the stock locations.

The stock sound system has 8" shallow mount subs installed in the lower doors and 6x8" mid range installed toward the top of the doors and in the rear deck.

With limited time/planning from this morning I was thinking of installing Kenwood 8" shallow mount subs (I'm limited to kenwood or pioneer for these) and probably Boston Acoustics 5.25" components in place of the 6x8s (both front and rear). I'm not set on boston acoustics yet but I do like a lot of their stuff so :dunno:

As I already mentioned I am doing speakers first since it sounds like garbage now due to a blown speaker or two; I might be ordering speakers tonight. The speakers will be followed up with a head unit later this month which will be installed with stock wiring & an adapter. I will leave it like that for a while until I build up some $$ in the bank for a house... I just want to get it the car sounding decent for now.

After I have put aside some $$ I am going to pull everything and run RCA cables and power to the trunk to a couple amps.. I was thinking about running a JL Audio 4 channel amp to the four components and run the preamp (from the 4 channel amp) out to a Rockford Fosgate 2 channel amp which will power the 8" subs in the doors.

When I pull everything out and do it right this 2nd time I will also run wires to the trunk for a Amp/Subwoofer but won't be buying and installing one of those right away. again... just to hold off until I build up some $$ in the bank... then get a sub and amp (I haven't decided on what to use for that yet but leaning towards a JL Audio stealth enclosure, sub, and amp).

My XJ has a gaping hole in the dash.

This comes in kind of handy for storing dozens of wadded up paper towels when racing through a shitstorm.

My XJ also has a gaping hole in the dash. I don't race through shitstorms so I use it for holding water bottles. Hoping to fill that with a radio sometime later this summer though

Glad to hear it :D

it feels really awsome, and with some majic i hope to have it run at somepoint this weekend, the set up might be a little ghetto though, and maybee have it move under its own power sometime next month

I don't have a pic that I know of, but back in the DD days my head unit shit the bed and I was a broke college kid, so I just pulled it out. Then I hollowed out the center console, dropped a 4-channel amp in there, and just ran off an iPod/discman/tuner via a headphone cable. Much easier.

I put my CB in the dash where the radio used to be and in that little useless spot under the 'factory clock', I cut out a square and mounted an external speaker for the CB.

At that same time I was usually driving doorless, and I wanted to improve the audio situation. Turns out you can fit 6x9's in the rear doors with only minimal trimming to the inside sheetmetal skin and still roll the windows down all the way. This was one of my favorite mods ever.

Ah, the good ol' days...

Back to real life, I've been sitting on my back deck for the last hour and a half, feet up with the laptop actually being a laptop, paying bills, BSing online, letting grooveshark do its thing, with a cooler of Coors Original next to me. This is tits.

That's pretty sweet. Lately I have just been using my zune with ear buds because I can't be bothered to work on the Jeep stereo. I will worry about that once I fix enough shit to pass inspection and get some other work that actually matters done.

I am thinking that I might try and rig up some roof mount for my CD player; I got the sheet metal brake and some spare sheet metal so it might not be too hard; mount the head unit right above/in front of the rearview mirror. Rivet that to the roof support thing, install a radio up there, and then just run wires along under the head liner to my soundbar for out back and run wires down to the dash for front speakers (going to try and make brackets to fit speakers under my dash since I am doorless often enough).

I have been tempted to pour a glass of scotch and go relax on the deck but I am trying to cut down on drinking so I guess it's just going to be relaxing w/o scotch :laugh3:

If you have the uber-deluxe manual-everything version of an XJ (read: no power windows/locks), the little blank area in the front door panel where all those switches would go works great for mounting your component tweeters. I had mine there for years.

Yup, I thought about doing that years back but never upgraded the speakers beyond what the PO had put in (Rockford fosgates). By the time I had enough money to buy components I had pulled the doors and lost interest in reconnecting my speakers so I just dealt with rear-only speakers.

Boy I hope I'm not too late, because you said you were gong to order something tonight.

I take it your doors are currently 3 way components from the sounds of this. That's cool and gives you a lot of options.

One thing I don't think you thought about was subwoofers in the doors. Doors, from the factory are neither infinite baffle nor sealed and certainly not tuned as a ported enclosure. May I inquire as to what your plan was for tackling that obstacle?

Also, the 5.25" components from Boston Acoustics almost definitely come with a passive crossover meaning that you only need one channel of amp to power both the tweet and mid. It splits the signal post-amplification. (As opposed to an active crossover which splits the signals prior to amplification)

I said it once and I'll say it again, do some more research and spend the $ at one time. You'll be happier with the end product and it will be less work to get it there. A soundsystem is a small enough project that it's not too difficult to do that... It sounds like you plan on getting into this a decent amount. Go read up on http://diymobileaudio.com/forum/ and see if you can learn some stuff on the topic.

Re: The NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I got raped hard today by Massachusetts, in this case literally Taxachusetts, when I payed for the title and tax on Rob's old Jeep. The tax didn't go by what I bought it by, but what they valued a cherokee by out of some book, which was almost 3 times as much as I paid.
