THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

plenty of people do doublers with 44's.

not everyone needs a 60.
Link to their thread?

I've heard a few stories of 60's blowing up in front of doublers/super low range Atlas/Stak/etc.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

then if the double will blow my shit up, why run it? if i can get D300 4:1 gears for a good price, i'll run just the 300. a rubi case is ~900 bucks. if i can do a d300 w/4:1 for less than 1000 bucks, i came out WAY ahead imho, espically bc i can do honda-esc ricer burnouts. i dont see a need for the insanely low low like chris has on his doubler, its INSANE.
That's sort of what I was getting at.

Sam is right.

im not going to search through the internets for build threads to prove something to you.

but heres a 44/60 rig i wheel with on occasion with a 231/300 doubler

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

The NP231 is the Dana 35 of transfercases. I wouldn't ever put $ into one again.

I'm pretty sure they have the same ring gear diameter and use the same bearings, spline count, and shaft dia. :moon:

Man, you're in full-on tard mode today, huh? :D

The Dana 35 ring gear is 7.562, Dana 30 is 7.20.

Dana 35 pinion shaft is 1.41, Dana 30 pinion shaft is 1.375.

Biggest reason they suck so bad in the rear is the little shaft diameter and housing deflection. The Dana 35 TTB center section is actually pretty stout - especially in high-pinion format - and I'm considering that with a Super 35 kit as an option in the next build.

What was your point here?

I went through 3 NP231's behind my AX15 and I'm on doubler housing number 4, and I still can't really talk badly about it.

Huh? Go on, you can put your last words here. No matter to me its just the interwebs in a thread only maybe a dozen people read.

So who coming up for free food Saturday? I know Colin is being lame.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Of course its not the best thing out there, what the hell are you comparing it to? A 203 or a 205?

Bill has one pushing 39s, I had one pushing 35s and DDin damn reliably, and plenty other people kept them when upgrading axles/tires.

Not a comparison to a D30 or D35 by any means.

How many people have broken a planetary set in one?

A fresh chain? (Not some stretched out one)

A case that wasn't from a stretched chain?

Not to mention they're much lighter, and much more compact than other transfer cases.

I partially stretched the chain in mine and shredded the synchro/dog teeth on the shafts for the shifter mechanism. First my lack of bumpstops mashed the rear shaft in, which misaligned things, then some mud did the rear seal in and it pissed all the fluid out while I was driving home, at that point the damage was done and it was a matter of time. I'm just glad it blew out on Vernon Street like 3 miles from my apartment instead of on the trails 2 hours away. Made it home under my own power though clunking and grinding and lurching, let it sit for a few weeks and then tossed a new case in in time to hit the trails again.

I'm pretty sure they have the same ring gear diameter and use the same bearings, spline count, and shaft dia. :moon:
30s are smaller (7.2" vs 7.563"). They do have the same spline count and approximate shaft diameter though. The real reason 30s survive in the front of an XJ is that the front axle can be weaker unless you're hammering it in reverse uphill, a 30 would blow up very quickly in the rear of one.

my reason for my 231 goin boom was it has 203k on it and zero fluid, besides that it took a massive beating with shitty gearing and big tires, it also had decent size chunks missing out of the bottom from getting dragged on rocks, and anthony if its such a bad case then why u using it for your doubler?
pretty much the same here.

I'll admit that I made a bad analogy. I was lucky enough to never own a D35 (in any form).

I'll be in NH. Thanks for the invite though

oh shit i totally forgot that was this weekend. 75% chance trevor and i are coming up, i'll make him red up his naxja username.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Saturday looks like I'm fixing a ZJ in the morning, eating lunch with you guys, then going to a soul music concert with some co-workers in the evening.

soul music is totally not my thing normally, this is going to be interesting to say the least.

Doing what? Depending on where you should at least stop down for a late lunch/early dinner.

I know, super annoying. I'm not sure why I talk to him.

Nice! Hopefully we can get a decent turnout.

Can't say I've ever really listened to it much. I can imagine the concerts being kinda... slow?

Yeah, not sure what to expect really... I'm used to industrial/metal concerts.

All day, unfortunately.

Heading up late Friday night, doing oil change on Jenn's mother's Jetta and probably some other around-the-house maintenance that has been neglected up there. Then in the afternoon I'm going to try my hand on the ski slopes for the first time ever. Probably family board games at night, church in the morning, then I'm going to head home in the afternoon to work on my XJ on Sunday night and all day Monday.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Jesus Christ. You guys are killing me today.

If you gear your axles right, I don't see a need for a doubler with an automatic. A stick shift is a different case entirely.

I don't even really like the 4:1 range. One of the guys I wheel with regularly has that, and his 3rd gear in 4:1 is lower than 1st gear in high range. He's always gotta stop at the end of a trail and shift it back to high. With an overdrive it might be OK. 4:1 in a planetary stage with the tranny in overdrive at medium speed running between trails whines like a noisy bitch.

I am 100% confident that there's no need for an additional mount on the 231/300 setup. I've broken 3 of them, but 0 from anything having to do with torque or leverage. I use the D300 as a step sometimes if I'm crawling around working on something. The current 231 went in before KOH 2010 and is still fine, even after an entire season of racing, by far the most hurt I've put on the rig in a single year.

Not to mention I've broken more (expensive) Dana 60 parts than most people ever will.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Bring the family! Burnt high test in the nostrils is 10x better than board games.

i'll be running 5.13s on 35s... but with the aw4 the extra low range would def be nice. 513s on 35s will prob be around the same feel as i had with the 456s and 33s.

i'd run the doubler, but if its as expensive as anthony said, its out of my budget at the moment. and shifting back to high? hell i do that all the time anyway.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

my aw4 slips when in high traction situations with my 5.38's and turdy fives.

i dunno what the eff my issue is though.

i hit the tc stall speed.

shit has like 100k on it.

might flush it tomorrow at work and see what happens. what sucks is i wont be able to test it until next time im wheeling when its perfectly dry out and i have a crazy traction obstacle
