Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Didn't everyone used to be a mudder...?

Im pretty sure thats how everyone starts. I swear Im still able to pull chunks of mud from WY out...

(please dont ask how the rims/tires are spotless, that mystery eludes me)

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

that mud is the same color as your hair

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I hate the new crapsmen ratchets. their gears are way to wide spread. I love my snap on and SK's because they have a much finer ratchet mech. I'm willing to spend the extra money on a good tool than on the parts for the Jeep.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Does craftsman not warranty ratchets? Can't you just give it to them for a new one?
They do, but it's nice to not have to use it.
Seriously, buy something for the jeep instead. I love tools (really, I do, the collection is getting disgustingly huge) as much as the next guy but there is just no point to a 3/4 drive set on a jeep, and there is ZERO point in getting it for a VW.

I've broken one Craftsman ratchet, and that was because I was really pissed and used it as a hammer. The stupid little plastic lever that set the ratchet direction broke off. Returned for a free replacement.
I was afraid of shattering my breaker bar taking the D70's pinion nut off and have a friend who has shattered one. I'd rather not join that club. This isn't the first time that I've come close to over-using 1/2" drive tools.

Have you ever worked on a VW? There are a couple large pieces of hardware, not that I'm buying the tools for that car anyway.

I've never flat out broken one, but I've worn out 3 sets.

Mine have 6* ratcheting, so it is pretty fine. (these) Much better than the shit ones that came with my set. I wore a set of this style out in about 2 months.

I have a video of my white ford spinng the tires after coming out of some mud and you can watch the wheel go from dirty to clean shits crazy!

As for breaking ratchets I Kill craftsman ratchets like its my job... Not sure how but mine always break

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

The second set is what I have here. I effing hate them. I swear my dad's snap ons that are older than me are better.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

What the hell are you guys doing that you're "wearing out" ratchets?

Before I lost my tool bag, I had over 3 years on that 1/2" ratchet, which was the Task Force 1/2" set from Lowes. That was the only ratchet I ever used for working on the XJ, because I try to only work out of the tool bag I carry on it, and it never gave me a problem. Good enough that I went and bought the same Task Force set again.

The 3/8" drive was this funky Husky one from Home Depot; it was a regular ratchet that the handle also twisted to spin the drive without having to swing it at all. I had that one for 6 years before that bag got lost.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

^ Exactly.
I'm not sure how the heck you guys are destroying ratchets on a regular basis.
Sure, I've broken my fair share, but it isn't a common thing.

Use a ratchet as a ratchet and a breaker bar as a breaker bar.

I still don't own a 3/4" drive set. Everything I did works with a 1/4, 3/8, or 1/2" just fine.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I beat the absolute crap out of my tools and haven't had a problem with my craftsman ratchets yet. I had a round headed style (no longer made, bought it in like 2003) 3/8" that lasted till early October, when it was stolen out of my center console, still working great. I busted a 1/2" by using it as a hammer as I said, one stupid piece of plastic. Currently have 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" of the second style you listed and haven't killed them yet.

My Evolv 12pt sockets are doing OK, even the one I have hammered the shit out of, but the 5/16" deep 1/4-drive Craftsman 12pt socket is starting to round off enough that it causes problems on ujoint strap bolts. Probably going to get it replaced soon and pick up a 6pt 5/16" for strap bolts anyways.

Yeah I don't get it either.

We only bought the 3/4" drive set because it was $40 and we gave ourselves a tool budget for the car show at Carlisle

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I have broken 3/8" ratchets (2 in the 3 years working at Sears) and 1 1/2" ratchet. Granted, I was using them for things they weren't designed for.

When I get a new ratchet I take it apart and clean all the gears and then put some grease in there for a quieter operation and to keep water out. It helps them last a lot longer.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I should probably just go to HF and blow a ton of money anyway.

fun, but dangerous :)

Speaking of which, I need to bring my chinese arbor press back to HF for replacement, we busted the crap out of the bolster plate and ram and bent the handle doing some ujoints :roflmao:

???

:D

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

alright, fixed:
I played Ross and busted the crap out of my arbor press doing some U-joints :roflmao:

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Anyone here ever listen to Ron & Fez? There was a good moral conundrum a few minutes ago that I'll repost here. See what y'all think. :D

So there's this really beautiful, crystal clear waterfall and lake. Somewhere in the middle of a pristine forest. It's not a place you've ever been to, you don't know where it is, and you'll never go there in your lifetime.

You have the opportunity to get a large sum of money, with the side effect being that this beautiful place gets destroyed. Again, you'll never actually see this place, nor will you see it get destroyed. But it'll happen.

What amount of money would you need to get, in order to be OK with this?

I'm surprising the hell out of myself here, but I honestly don't think any amount of money would make me really feel OK with that.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Like removed from existance destroyed? Or just burned or whatever?

Nature rebuilds itself over time.

Give me enough money to work at a home depot or something for the rest of my life and still live comfortably and I'd be fine if it was just burned down or whatever.
