Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I can't wait spent a couple hours getting the truck ready my camera has fresh batteries so it better be good or i'll be pissed. Chris i keep forgetting you live 5 minutes down the road from me maybe i'll swing by one day promise i won't chew your ear off like nac fest 08 lol

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Lol. Thought you were further north now?

Either way, if you drive by and I'm here, I make a bitchin hot cider that you're more than welcome to.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I moved back to fords with my grandma cause i was working there and taking care of her but shit hit the fan so i've been back in Morganville, Damn that hot cider sounds really good rite now :lickout: and if you ever need help throwing a wrench im always game. I really thought about taking the Datsun out but i already drained all the gas out for storage :( and i don't want to mess up the original paint or the fact that its probably the only rust free Z in NJ lol

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Never been in quite those dire straits, but I did a T-case rebuild in mine in my apartment complex parking lot. Took down only the back half of the case because I didn't have tools to get to the top hex nut holding the t-case to the trans. That chain does come out and go back in without removing the front yoke...

Midway through the removal, it started downpouring, and my parking spot was on the side of the lot that tended to flood a few inches deep. So I ended up pulling the back half of my 231 down while laying in 3" of water. Not an experience I'd like to repeat.

The preface to that was when I pulled the fill plug on the 231 to see if it had oil in it, and I got a face full of gearoilmud. When it pours out of the fill plug you know you're in for a treat. Further into it, I found out the oil pump in the 231 had given up, and all the splines on the gerotor (?) were completely sheared off and the oil pump was done. In hindsight, everything left in the front half was still fine, so it wasn't the *worst* way to go about it...

That was November 2004. Fast forward 6 years and 3 months, and I had my XJ out tonight driving down the county road by my buddy's shop. First time I've really driven it since Halloween because of all the carnage of the last race. Hit the rev limiter in 3rd gear hi range before realizing I didn't have any brakes...later examination showed that one of the banjo bolts on the rear calipers was bent. And it was 24* with no windshield and no windows.

I haven't had more fun driving something in a very long time. :D
I hope you meant atfmud! :scared:

Yeah, it mostly sucked. Wasn't bad when the wind went down, honestly. I did my drivetrain swap (yanked everything out, put new tranny in, stuffed it all back in) in a thunderstorm starting around 2-3pm, with a flashlight in my teeth toward the end. I wouls take that over last night in a heartbeat.

Somewhere around here I actually have a pic of myself that I took after finishing that swap. It kinda shows why I don't think trail repairs are all that bad :roflmao:

Might have been a contributing factor to the oil pump's demise. :gag:

I never did have good luck with 231's. Also by my own fault, the driveshaft I made before driving 1000 miles to wheel at Tellico for 4 days was too long, and bottomed out and blew the back snap ring off the 231 output shaft. Which lets it move around and jump out from under the shift collar. I trimmed the end of the slip yoke down and couldn't find a replacement snap ring anywhere, so I ended up driving to Tellico anyway with a broken transfer case.

One of the guys who was attending that run from TN had just done a SYE and had the snap ring in a box of removed parts. He brought it with him and the first night down there, after driving 1000 miles, I pulled the 231 out by the campfire and fixed everything.

I also made a habit of collecting the steel range forks and using them instead of the newer aluminum range forks, because if the shift pads wore through on the steel ones, the whole fork didn't get eaten up.

Also spent the first year and a half after the initial 4x4 swap shifting the transfer case from underneath because I couldn't find a factory linkage to work with my AX-15. God Bless Novak.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I blew up three of the aluminum vacuum disco shift forks before swapping in a cast iron one out of a Dodge D44 vacuum disco.

Something else blew up after that and I lost 4WD. Didn't even open it to find out what it was, I just junked the axle and swapped in a non-disco.

this is the first one I've blown up. I pulled the fill/drain plugs just for laughs and apparently it was leaking a hell of a lot faster then I thought when I was filling it up occasionally, because only about a cup came out. No mud or water, though.

I'm also shifting from under the vehicle because I boogered up the stupid bellcrank in the middle of the linkage when I pulled and reinstalled the drivetrain (I hate getting those stupid things to seat properly) and the first time I took it out on the trail, the linkages promptly bent double due to a combination of rust and neglect. Didn't put any of it back in last night, so I'm either doing the S10 231 swap + allthread + min heims, or just continuing to shift manually.

EDIT: wtf, Anthony your evil twin just walked by my cube.
weird.
If only you had this kind of motivation with your XJ.

*sigh*

:D
I got nothin'
Rob is always angry online and always happy in person.
Or he'll trash talk you on this thread then send an instant message 'hey, what's up?'

Travis just got his Jeep started. 4th battery was the charm.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I was guessing a toasted battery or a bad ground or power cable. Apparently the batteries he had were at like 10V before going in the jeep and 3.something after, which explains the lack of starter relay click.

Oh yeah, looks like I get to do some U-joints on the 96. When I pulled the front driveshaft to do the 231 swap last night one of the caps fell off the diff end, there were like 1/2 the proper number of needle bearings and the rest was full of rust, mud, and maybe some grease. The seals are practically falling off.

Spicer 1310s.

I can grab some from Jeff or something if it makes it easier.

I have a few of em squirreled away somewhere, I think I have some Precisions (spares only!) in my oh shit kit and some spicers I got from him or alljeep in storage or at the house. I'm gonna toss a new joint in my spare shaft and install it tonight.

I probably should put a new outer pinion bearing in the 30 as well, it has a gross amount of play in the pinion, but I am not sure I really care.

Sweet.

I always had good luck with precision joints, at least in the driveshafts. They never gave me a problem and I even ran them in my XJ on 35s.
