THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

without putting me in the same group as Ryan (twice) and Adam (twice).

FIFY

One of my pet peeves: When people say they "broke a shaft" but all they did was break a u-joint which took out the ears.

I've still yet to legtimately break an axleshaft.

i actually trashed a shaft and had a brute force survive :dunno: my favorite is twisted splines.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

shit, adam has spit a cross shaft out twice now?

yeah I'm not letting that roll pin stay in there.

Anyone feel like measuring the ID of the roll pin hole? (where the roll pin goes, not where it necks out to a slightly larger hole at the end) I have a 30 carrier sitting in arm's reach but I left my calipers in the MJ and drove the 96 today :(

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

debatable.

I don't really intend to run 35s, I've always said (well, sorta) that I'd stick to 33s, or 32s, or 31s. I *just* bought the 33s I have and maybe have 2000 highway miles on them, if that. Right now my 30 is stock geared and worthless due to rusted brackets, so I honestly don't give a damn if it breaks in half, so long as I can drag the stupid thing back home (i.e. soon as the massivemobile is rolling again.) I'm likely going to just tap the carrier in the 30 I have with 4.10s so I can put a real cross pin retention bolt in it. I'd switch to 44s in a heartbeat if I could find a way to put my current 33s on them with a minimum of cash spent on rims, since I just bought my damn rims too... or if I could find 44s with 4.56s for about the same price as those ones Keith found, or less.

Basically I'm aiming for the least wallet-bleeding that will result in the closest gearing for whatever tires end up going on the axles, without putting me in the same group as Ryan (twice) and Adam.

And at this point none of this is going under the 96, it's going right under the 98, I want the 96 done ASAP and so it's staying with stock gears because that means it's ready to go sooner.

Buy all my junk for $1000.

XJ44 built with 4.88s, evos, etc.
35s on 5x5.5 rims
Slightly used HP44 4.88s
Dodge D44 outers (flat tops and 5x5.5 bolt pattern)
I'll even throw in the steering I have for waggy width ("1 ton" TREs, 1.5x.250 DOM steering)

All you'd have to do is find a HP44 you want. Run it full width if you want, or narrow it.

- Weld on some brackets
- Throw my gears in it (if it comes with 4.10s you can use that carrier)
- Throw my steering on it if you want waggy width or build your own
- Make your trackbar work or build one
- Bolt my XJ44 in
- Throw my rims on
- Beat the crap out of it

Seriously...I want all this crap gone.

heres my five minutes

although i dont think im in any place to take on a build like this right now. I can't weld nor have a welder, would have no idea where to even begin building one, and probably can't afford to build one right now either. THE RESEARCH BEGINS! (If you guys could point me to a "building dana 44's for dummies" that would be great :D)

im debating getting a full case locker for the 30 for now, and build the 44 in the meantime. we'll see, i just hope i get something done for rocktoberfest

i have only legitimately broken shafts lol.

the only u joints i ever broke werent spicers

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Ryan, look in the FAQ section here. CRASH posted a good D44 buildup a long time ago that still holds true for the most part.

Also, check out Mr. Ns site for everything D44.

Also, the only welding you'll need to do is for the axle end brackets, steering, and trackbar. I'm sure someone on here would do the final welding for food/beer.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

This is where the debate came for Adam.

Are you going to stay on 35s? If so a D44 is great.

Are you going to 37s or bigger? If so you might as well just start building a D60.

I wish I had the space in my budget for that right now :( the massivemobile just put a 500+ dollar dent in my wallet that I was not expecting/was hoping wouldn't happen, and if I get the 46s I was planning on, that's another 1200 at least... which is why I'm staying on NDTs for now since I can get another dozen or so on rims for $5 each. Then I still have to bend over for registration and insurance, don't even want to think about what that's going to run me.

also damnit wtf, I am never ordering from this TNJMurray place again, they still haven't charged my card which means they likely haven't even considered putting the order together yet. I called last tuesday and they said they'd get back to me, they didn't so I called again thursday and placed the order and the idiot taking the call had to have things repeated back to them like 3 times and still probably got it wrong. If the wrong parts show up wayyyy late I am going to be rather displeased.

EDIT: Sam, noticed that and went "huh wonder when that happened"

Thanks I'll check those out

I will be no bigger than 35's for a while, like a long while probably for another ten years or so. Maybe then I'll step up bigger, but in the forseeable future I dont see myself running anything bigger than 35's for a long time.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I wonder how large a tire my D30 with truetrac would hold up to... Currently not planning on wheeling anything bigger than the 34" LTBs that I have but doesn't mean I'm not curious :dunno:

Edit: Damnit, I was just thinking about the family bbq/party we have this wkend and got the craving for clam chowder. I then realized I have to decide between going wheeling sun/mon and hanging out with the fam for the wkend (party last Sat-Mon but the main BBQ is Sunday afternoon which I would be missing). I still can't decide between wheeling and family party but with my record I feel like I should go wheeling rather than backing out again  I really don't want to miss this party though.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

holy shit, nevermind about my badmouthing of TNJMurray... they just called up without me bugging them at all, they didn't have any new tie rod ends so they pulled a brand new tie rod AND tie rod ends off an axle assembly they were parting out and shipped me the whole thing no extra cost. It's all leaving the warehouse today and will be here in a few days... was hoping for this weekend, but I guess that won't happen, seems I'll be spending my time on the XJ and MJ instead of the massivemobile.

I might actually have a bent tie rod, not sure, guess I'll now find out and have a still usable spare on hand, in case I ever manage to bend a 2" solid tie rod more than it might be already.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

work on the MJ!

I'll be putting in my new shackles (hopefully) and/or hacking up my rear quarters and welding the remaining floorboards in.

Might slack off and gut another dead AW4 or two as well.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Get a bicycle frame, cut it up, weld it to the front crossmember, take the hood off, get ahold of Ross for the evening, and drive the MJ to the DWE meeting.
