THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

boring lol, thats it? 6th gear, 12k rpm, 167. yes it was dumb, first and last time ill do it.
holy crap... when I did 126 on mine I thought that was fast

I never understood this. What do guys with buggies do then? It's not like they can just go buzz around the street for 500 miles to break in the gears.

I think it's more of a "no holeshots" rule.
When the gears "break in" they lapp together. The contact patches go from just a machined surface to a polished surface. Look at the gears you took out of your front 44 vs a brand new r&p... The quality of the surface finish effects strength, too. I'm not sure how much in this case, but I wouldn't guess too too much. I don't know, you might have a point. I agree that holeshots would be a bad idea :gee:

Got any lessons learned from doing an 8.25?

I've only done a few D44s, so no experience with crush sleeves or carrier adjusters.

How was it crushing the crush sleeve? I'm assuming you made a tool to turn the adjusters?

I know a few of my own:
- Always make setup bearings first
- Write down original shim pack setup
- Write down each combination and how it measured out (backlash, pattern, etc.)
- Always grab a couple extra pinion nuts since they can strip out (use the old one for as long as you can)
I have d30-sized pinion nuts of the non staked variety if anyone needs em at any point in the future. Free, I had to buy a bag of 10 at one point.

Another trick (which the FSM told me) is that factory gearsets have the shim pack they determined at manufacture time written on them, you'll see like a +4 or a -2 etc on the head of the pinion. The pinion I have sitting here from a 3.55 set says 0 on it, so I guess they were doing good that day. If you are putting in another set of spicer gears I think they still mark them like that, so you can add or subtract the difference in the numbers scribed on the pinion heads from your starting shim pack and it *should* help. See the gear setup / diff section of any XJ FSM for more info, I might be a little fuzzy on this.

EDIT: and I think the buggy guys should probably just stick to green trails? :dunno: or buzz around in the desert a bit for the southwestern guys.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

ugh, don't want to be here. All the work I have to do is stupid tedious crap that I REALLY don't want to do. I would much rather be finishing up the XJ.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I still can't find a few various things since I moved. Kind of annoying. I'm missing my good can opener, some measuring spoons, my countersinks, and some other various kitchen stuff.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Happens to me every time. Last night I spent half an hour looking for my caulking gun so I could throw some RTV on something and finally gave up. Got in jeep#3 to go to Home Depot and buy another one since they're like 5 bucks and there it was... sitting on the passenger seat.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

yeah I don't know where this stuff could be. I feel like I've looked everywhere.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Yup, I am missing a ton of stuff from my last move but I'm guessing it's just in some random box/drawer in my storage unit. When I moved from VA I had 1.5 days to pack all my stuff and get it into a truck so I started packing all organized and labeling boxes, by the end I was just tossing random shit in any box, desk drawer, dresser drawer, etc. Hell I found a bunch of computer stuff when I opened the box to my blender last summer, forgot that I had packed most everything and that box was on top so I just dropped a bunch of crap in there for the move :gee:

Best part is the way my stuff was put into the storage unit there are 3 dresser drawers that can't be opened so idk what the hell is in them and won't know until either A) I unpack the unit or B) can find someone to go and move shit around for a while so I can get in there.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

And I think I am taking a week or 2 off next summer to take a motorcycle trip with a guy that I work with. He mentioned that he is always pissed that none of his friends ride because he wants to tour the US on bikes for a few weeks, then he remembered I ride.

We are currently discussing whether it will be a 1.5 week tour of the east coast or a 2-3 week tour covering more of the country. I kinda can't wait, hopefully we can find a few more folks to go, maybe my buddy will have a bike by then and I know he would go.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

If I was going to waste vacation time traveling instead of using it to build something, I would spend 3 weeks traveling cross country by jumping freight trains.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

haha, funny thing is that's more or less what I said. When I said I was on board for the trip the other guy was ready go this year, he is planning to take the week after labor day off to work on the MJ and do some housework he has been putting off and mentioned that we could go then. I told him I can't afford to waste vaca yet, and I would be on board next summer when I have 3+ weeks of vaca accrued along with 3+ days personal time. And I also mentioned it has to be over a long weekend so we can leave on a Friday and get back on a Sunday and I would only need to take 4 days off (or take 5-6 days off and just not get back until monday or tuesday the following week).

Ever since I lost my job in VA I have HATED using vacation time. I'm still super concerned I could lose my job at any time and the vaca hours I have saved up would give me at least an extra paycheck worth of cash which would cover most of my bills for an extra 2-3 months (excluding rent, however the folks would probably stop charging rent if I lost the job).

I can build crap on week nights. I like going places.

point taken. I like going places, I just like building things more, and depending on what dumpsters and junkyards I scavenge in, building things is cheaper.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I actually just heard someone talking about an all you can fly pass that you pay $450 and get a pass that you can fly for free for something like a month. I was tempted to try and look that up, would be cool to just fly all over the country, go somewhere different every weekend. Yeah I would sacrifice a month worth of weekends but it would be cool.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Oh and I found a magnet that works from my dad, but you can still bring yours if you want. I know you want to pick up the shocks for Mark. Just give me a call.

fine, ill be over later.

You guys are boring. I never failed to hit the rev limiter at least 5 times every day I drove my old XJ.

Even yesterday I hit 3k rpms in 5th gear in the CTD. Speedo said 110.

kate even hits rev limiter!!!

110 eh? too bad you couldnt keep, howd those euro tail lights look? :D

I wouldn't use an old pinion nut from and old pinion. Not worth if to the sub $2.50.

nothing beats when i thought i stripped the pinion on travis' setup.

roller tires + chained to something + huge smokey burnout equvielent to 500 miles = ready to go!!

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I'm gonna strap my truck to your dumb XJ and rip it in half.
I'm gonna strap my truck to your truck and rip your truck in half while you rip his XJ in half!!!

PS, I would go nuts if I did not have spare time to work on projects in the evenings. No masters for me.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Make sure there's a video camera around for when that happens.
