THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

OMG it seems like I have finally tweaked the wireless router downstairs enough to keep a steady connection upstairs :D (knock on wood... and normally I find that an easy task but my god I couldn't get my internet to stop sucking lately)

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

:embarassed face: my xj rarely goes above 2900 rpm.

However, I get 21.5mpg consistently.
That's funny. I redlined mine on my test drive before I even bought it...

So Anthony, that drill press you listed.. I dont think you will be getting it since you just got one but has anyone else chimed in about it? I didn't see anyone say anything but just kinda skimmed the last 5 pages when I got home so idk for sure. if not I will probably end up emailing them about it..
Sure, go ahead. When I post deals like that it typically means they're fair game. That is, of course, unless I say "hey look what I'm going to try to buy"
I mean the following in the nicest way possible. Really I do... :D

That's all it ever is with you is plans and talk, plans and talk.

I'll believe it when I see it. Otherwise this is just like your D60 shaving, red jeep lowering, dovetailing front, etc plans.

:kissyou:
Dear Bill,
Thanks for telling it like it is.
Sincerely,
Anthony
PS: I just came in from the garage. Had to make some brackets my father requested but then I got to work on the doubler. I got the center of both the clocking ring and 231 backing plate marked. No more guessing, I was able to measure the radius and move my center till the radius was the same all the way around.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

My various jeeps have:
* hit rev limiter doing 80 due to fubar tranny
* hit rev limiter doing whatever speed I was doing with most of my tires spinning last winter in a parking lot going in circles
* cruised all the way from rausch creek to mass @ like 2200rpm with 1400lbs of crap on board, got 23+mpg on a tired auto
* driven only a couple hundred miles in random bits and pieces on the manumatic and I have absolutely no idea what my mileage is, but it sure is fun listening to it scream along at 4-5k in first

oh, and I think the massivemobile saw 2800... once... when I was an idiot and engine braked (not supposed to do that on this engine) while going a little too fast for that gear.

Jay, I have that muffler sitting in the back of jeep#3, let me know when you want it.
Mark, I have many parts for the briarwood, will bring them to M&G. Exhaust bushing, front crossmember, chrome grille with slight peeling, chrome light bezels in good shape.
Keith, I have your kick panels, will bring them to the M&G.

Oh yeah, figured out why the front of the massivemobile hops and jumps a little at 48-49mph... the two front tires are flat-spotted pretty hardcore, i.e. their radius is approximately 1/2" lower at one spot on each one. I'm gonna pick up a spare or eight from the guy on CL selling them for 5 bucks a whack, pick the best ones from those and my existing tires, and run em for now.

And Bill, you were wrong you foolish foolish boy. I needed .008" more for a total of .026 but for some reason my orig .027" was too deep. Or I had a FUBAR'd backlash...

Cool, if Ross's deal isn't super awesome sweetness I will email or call about that. I put my money on me buying from Ross though, esp if we can work some steel into the deal (or just pick all of it up in one trip to his place :D though I more or less drive by his place every day on my way to work so I guess that's a non-issue)

And I have to weld up a bunch of stuff for my father pretty soon, apparently his sign in front of his office isn't doing too well and he need some work done. My only concern is welding on a main road and having random people stare at the weld, so I figure I will do it at night and throw up a tarp.. at least that's my excuse for putting the work off..

One time I went to teach a friend how to drive a manual at the local mall after hours on fri or sat night (in Springfield MA), before letting him drive I started whipping donuts at rev limiter. we changed seats, he started to drive, cops pulled up... i told them I was teaching my buddy to drive a manual and they left... victory was mine. :D

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

:shhh: some plans are actually being carried out. 60 shave = no, red jeep = getting lifted, dovetailing = in progress.

.!.:D.!.

So...none of your original plans are being carried out since there's no dovetail progress?

:D

Oh and I found a magnet that works from my dad, but you can still bring yours if you want. I know you want to pick up the shocks for Mark. Just give me a call.

mine will still be cooler, also im so tempted to get rid of my drive slug flanges just for the heavy duty ones with the shilloette of the fat chick due to the humor factor

Whose slugs are you running? Solids?

That's funny. I redlined mine on my test drive before I even bought it...

You guys are boring. I never failed to hit the rev limiter at least 5 times every day I drove my old XJ.

Even yesterday I hit 3k rpms in 5th gear in the CTD. Speedo said 110.

KA BLAMMO I'm doneski!

Told ya  Came out awesome, nice job dude!

None of us are experts at this, just trying to give a helping hand. Glad you got it sorted out and didn't settle.

MUCH better pattern. If you needed 8 more and ended up at 0.026 you either measured wrong, converted from metric to english wrong, added wrong, or had dirt between the shims. Glad you got it right.

I was just busting on Bill. There's no way he could have known for a fact with out checking it in person. I wont hold a grudge for that. :D

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Got any lessons learned from doing an 8.25?

I've only done a few D44s, so no experience with crush sleeves or carrier adjusters.

How was it crushing the crush sleeve? I'm assuming you made a tool to turn the adjusters?

I know a few of my own:
- Always make setup bearings first
- Write down original shim pack setup
- Write down each combination and how it measured out (backlash, pattern, etc.)
- Always grab a couple extra pinion nuts since they can strip out (use the old one for as long as you can)

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

When I did reset the gears in my 8.25 (all I had to adjust was backlash - I made a mistake and took the carrier out ) I made my own tool out of a bent tie rod, a big nut, and a bolt. Free to anyone who wants it. I found that to make the carrier go one way or the other it was best to "work" with one side. Figure out which side the carrier needs to go towards with the whole thing loose then adjust that side first. Tighten the other side towards it. I found that everything moved less when I did it this way. I hope that made sense.

Also, if I were to do a 8.25 again I'd make 2 tools.

boring lol, thats it? 6th gear, 12k rpm, 167. yes it was dumb, first and last time ill do it.

Exactly.

I was thinking you are either great at math or great at reading a micrometer, but not both. ;)

I wouldn't use an old pinion nut from and old pinion. Not worth if to the sub $2.50.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Yeah I learned to buy a D44 instead or charge someone out the ass to do it for them. Oh and take it out of the Jeep, that carrier is heavy trying to hold it up with your head and line up the adjuster screws. And as for the tool, I took two long solid bar stock that I had lying around and welded I think a 1 7/16 bolt to the end. I made two so I didnt have to keep swapping sides. I'm going out to the garage now to pull the d30 out and do it on jack stands instead of in the Jeep.

Oh and I did get a new crush collar. like $5 at the dealer so what ever.

I think Colin was talking about using an old one for during setup only...

It's a 36mm nut, actually. D30 stub shaft nut works perfectly. Doing it on stands is totally the way to go. Smart move.

I had standard easily accessible at teh time and they fit good enough so I went with them. They were tight enought that they wouldnt strip or disfigure the adjusters while preloading the bearings.

Sweetness

To Bill's point, for $2.50, not worth it to even bother using an old nut.

Yeah, I used a standard 3" nut and ground the sides till it fit. Same idea. :gee: Feels good getting stuff done, doesn't it?

Edit: don't pull a Billy: remember to put lube in the diff's and Don't wheel a brand new gearset.
