THe NAC Lots-O-BFG KO2 Thread

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I would bid once or twice on that if it was closer. Never know when you will have to move a truck that's on the other side of a creek :roflmao:
I don't bid on things unless I intend to win. Why bid once or twice?

I will be intensely amused if one of you guys buys that and wheels it, between that vehicle and mine we can recover damn near any jeep I think. Flopped with a blown engine half a mile from the road? no problem!

Badge of honor:

This is what the guy who bought it off of the government paid: (I think I got a good deal)

Can't see it very well, but that's a penny sitting on the front of the front valve cover:

I need to upgrade my front axle, it's not strong enough (for scale, nuts holding top of diff on are 1") :

Think a V8 ZJ tie rod will fit this? 7/8" wrench approx 10" long for scale:

Front driveshaft u-joint, same wrench:

Front rear diff, driveshaft, note ring shape of u-joint:

My hand next to driveshaft and u-joint:

e-brake assembly and u-joint at rear output of transfer case (government is smart for once and did not use a single slip yoke, I am glad because I don't want to try and find an SYE kit for this thing) :

My thumb next to slip joint for scale:

View from top of rear rear diff looking forward, shows rear rear driveshaft and rear suspension bogie links:

Rear 6-link, hell yeah (other links not pictured) :

Nameplate on rear rear diff (6.443 gears, was hoping for 6.72s, oh well) :

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Bolts holding link brackets and spring pads onto axle "tubes" are suitably beefy, appear to be 7/8" diameter unobtainium:

Not much ground clearance under diff, only about 11" or so, I actually did drag this over something at RC from the look of it, not worried though because the bottom of the pumpkin appears to be 1/2" plate:

Wrench sitting on spring+link brackets for scale:

Didn't take pics of the tranny and transfer case because I forgot to.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

that picture next to the prius is hilarious & needs to be captioned. I think you should submit it on NEOW in the OT forum and ask them to caption it...they love doing that.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

hahaha, if I had more than like 2 posts on NEOW I might drop in.

Jeff... I might be by sometime... I need spare ujoints for the new rig :roflmao:

Got anything?!

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Ken im pretty sure they make high clearence diff covers for those:firedevil

on a side note, goin to 7-11 crabbin a coke and slice of pizzia, then coming home and gonna outnumber some steel plate with a skillsaw, andgle grinder and jigsaw

Why bid once or twice? If no one else bids and I can get it for $500 or less then I might consider taking it, but any more than that and I lose interest in spending my $$. Hell it's a damn forklift, I don't need one of those. but it would be awesome. Make moving vehicles around the yard easier.

And that's the first thing I thought of too, wondering how wide it is and if I could fit it on any trails. Maybe take the fork off to make it a bit more manageable

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

The bottoms of the pumpkins are welded on - if I am going to do high clearance it'll be with a plasma cutter and a sheet of 1/2" plate, I'd shave em.

But it's getting mostly-restored a tiny bit at a time, so probably not...

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I predict that M35A2 will sell for at least 2500, maybe 3k. It's got a hardtop but no winch else it would likely sell for 3500 or more.

You will want to have someone preview it for you and see if it's repairable, arrange shipping, etc. Be prepared to wait two months for an EUC so you can get your SFR97 to get a title for it.

Private sales are WAY easier on shit like this, I emailed the guy at 2:40 last Wednesday, had agreed on a price by that evening, had decided I was going to buy it for sure by Thursday, made plans as to how I was going to be getting there by Thursday night, plans on how I was going to get back by Friday night, bought it Saturday and had it home AND wheeled it (a little, didn't trust it enough to wheel the whole day and still make it home, glad I didn't) by Sunday.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Yeah, I would expect private to be easier but I am going to keep an eye on a couple of those and see how much they end up selling for just to get an idea. I wonder how the fuel economy is on a 2.5 ton vs a 5 ton

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Much better. You can get 8-10 driving normally or 10-12 if you baby it.

I get 5mpg - but I will never need to speak with AAA or uhaul again.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I would think a 2.5 ton should be able to keep me away from AAA as well, don't need a 5 ton to move a car

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Definitely.

I only bought a 5 ton because I got it for less than I could find a deuce for, and it's actually somewhat easier to work on and get parts for. Deuces use a strange 6-by-huge bolt pattern that isn't used on any other vehicles AFAIK, while 5 tons use the standard 10 bolt semi truck pattern.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Cool, good to know. I won't be buying something like this any time soon but good for the eventual day when I might get one. I can't get one until I get a house, and once I get a house i will probably be tight on cash and not be able to afford one

3/8" thick, actually. http://pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=784718

Got some more work done, Stripped all the paint off the one housing cleaned all the crap off and took a bunch of measurements. Broke out the plasma and made the housing more Rock friendly. All said and done I'll be gaining about 2" at the very peak, allowing for a 1/2" thick skid (the current belly is 3/8"thick). And 3-4" on the rest of it. Ground clearance I don't know for sure yet, but from the center of the diff, to the absolute bottom of the skid will be 7". If memory serves me correctly, that's about the same as a 14ff.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

I think I'm going to hold off on the 440 for now.

After looking up everything that's involved, I'd be in over my head a couple $K more and probably at least half a years worth time (exhaust, cooling, finding trans parts, dealing with EFI kits, etc.).

Not to mention I have every drivetrain piece I need right now to get it wheelin. And gawd do I wanna wheel.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Well it wouldn't be JUST to avoid AAA, it's just badass as well.

and I was looking at flatbeds back when I saw shopping for a CTD/trailer but decided I didn't want to DD a flatbed. I suppose that just for bringing the XJ to/from trails an old flatbed wouldn't be a bad thing to have around as a spare vehicle.

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

ok

how come

every 4.0l i have ever owned, used a small amount of coolant? everything else has been fine. i have put plenty of miles on em and it never got worse.

BUT EVERYTIME I POP THE CAP IM LOW ON COOLANT.

well this time i appear to need a waydiator, but it got me thinkin

Re: THe NAC Lots-O-Post Thread

Damn, I held my 7/8" wrench up next to it and it appeared to be half inch. Guess I got it wrong :dunce:

If I was just buying a truck to avoid AAA I would get something like this http://nh.craigslist.org/cto/1873157316.html Much easier to drive and store.
Well, this does other stuff... hell, if my rig isn't ready to run by the 21st, I might try taking it down the class 6 roads instead.

Strange. My MJ was using a gallon of coolant every day back in May or so, I just said xxxx it and kept filling it up, it abruptly stopped leaking entirely and hasn't used or leaked a drop (of coolant anyways) since then.
