On 96+ they changed the output shaft seal and slip yoke so that the seal rides on the shaft not the yoke, so it doesn't leak out.

Hell if I knew, cool it's a 96 problem solved I guess. I assumed all slipyoke tcases leak when you pull the shaft.

Yeah, it's pretty nice except that as a byproduct it makes you need an SYE at a lower lift height sometimes, because the output shaft is longer and the yoke isn't supported/stabilized quite as well.

yeah but it was on a 96-up transfer case so it doesn't count.

grab a 1L coke bottle and some duct tape, apparently works pretty nicely when done right.

isnt that a oxymoron or something, anything using duct tape and coke bottle being done right? haha

I'm partially taking notice of what you're doing. I would like to put a 203 range box in front of my dana20 in the future if I can build everything myself.

I care about it but am less interested unless I see pics of said tech.

With that said, why couldn't you grab the correct intermediate shaft (assuming you're buying it) mock up both cases, then use a transfer punch? I think that was the idea you had before?

I haven't seen a D300 up close so I don't know how the input is set up.

it's kinda painful to do but unfortunately my vehicles without turbo are 8 tons lighter, 3 times better on gas mileage and run cheaper fuel, and have roofs. I still dislike driving them.

Had to drive the MJ today because it was raining when I left for work... :flamemad: but I'm getting out of work an hour earlier to drive home, fire the massivemobile up, and head for the car show. I hope I can actually get it into the car show without running shit over, some of those corners are really tight - might have to park in an empty area of the lot.

same, but usually 2-3 hours... mostly incremental repairs to whichever vehicle I feel like working on that day.

That's sort of the idea I had before but I never decided to buy it... I'm still leaning toward making my own. My idea on how to find the center is to cut the 231 output shaft to fit behind the plate, bore a hole in it, slip a transfer punch backwards into the hole, and make a mark on the plate.

If I had the intermediate shaft in I would have no way to mark center or get the plate in there...

Not sure what the Dana 300 input has to do with anything - there won't be any holes in the 231 backing plate for it to go through. But here's a pic of it anyway.

it used to do this to me regularly (usually when I was late), and this time I had had enough, so I disassembled it and rigged up an external battery pack so I could finish the job without being late to work waiting for the damn thing to charge:

Hence the problem, I have no idea what the setup is supposed to look like :laugh:

I'm assuming the NP231 output shaft slides into the intermediate shaft which slides into the D300 input shaft. How do the two plates bolt together? Is one bolted (with countersinks) to the D300, with the other NP231 plate bolting to that, and then the NP231 case half bolts to that plate with the case bolts?

Just trying to picture it.

dunno, depends on the charger voltage/current rating. That's just the 5-minute "I'm pissed off and have half a beard and need to get to work NOW" fix, tonight I'm probably going to rebuild it properly to use an external battery pack.

As a side note, it now works better (less the missing hand grips, those need to be put back on) than it ever has, because the only battery pack I had sitting around was a 3 volt 2x AAA pack, while the original battery was a 1.2 volt NiMH cell. So it was spinning about 2.5 times faster than normal.
