I was thinking that (and no, I have no intentions of doing something like this, I just think it's awesome) but then I read down a bit further. This guy put two of these setups together for about 250 in materials, admittedly he was getting the transmissions for 20 or so each. I find 250 in materials and a bit of awesome redneck engineering a lot more interesting than a few grand on (an amazingly awesome) transfer case. Guess I just like ingenious, make-it-work-on-a-budget fabrication.
